Valley Cottage’s Manca Wins School Board Seat

Jennifer Manca won a seat on the Nyack School Board.

In somewhat of a comeback story, Jennifer Manca (703 votes), a Valley Cottage investigator and parent with three kids in each school level, generated huge support from her local community (see how the voting broke down by polling location below) and won a spot on the Nyack School Board, along with incumbent Michael Mark (692 votes).

Though a relatively close race, Manca beat out incumbent trustee Matthew Watson (643 votes) by racking up huge vote margins (338 to Watson’s 166) in Valley Cottage. Upper Nyack, meanwhile, clearly, but not quite so definitively, preferred Watson over Manca, 274-208.

This year, Valley Cottage turned out in higher numbers than Upper Nyack. But overall, election turnout was down from 2023, although there were two propositions that year and 6 candidates vying for three seats, so that might have had something to do with it.

In 2023, Manca finished 5th out of six candidates.

This year, she came out on top.

Voters also approved a $112.5 million spending plan, 997-184. Check out a presentation of the budget here. I did learn at Thursday night’s Upper Nyack’s end of the year concert that it would help pay for breakfast and lunch at music camp this summer!

Here’s our coverage of the separate but nearly simultaneous fires that erupted in Nyack on Tuesday morning and displaced 13 families.

Help in one of three ways:

  • NAACP’s Go Fund Me effort (which has raised more than $78K as of Thursday night.)
  • Nyack Center, which is also collecting gift cards and personal hygiene items.
  • The United Way, which is coordinating short and long-term recovery efforts.

Food for thought …

Check out this interview video by lohud with the owners of DPNB about the opening of their latest venture and Nyack’s newest wine bar, Louie’s Next Door. My wife went last week with her girlfriends and said it was both a blast and delicious — the menu swerving into interesting and adventurous culinary terrain.

Musical Outro (send us recs!)

This one’s for the Nyack fire victims. Hang in there.
