To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, dozens of local activists, community members and families congregated in downtown Nyack. The organizers, Indivisible Rockland Organizing Committee, a spinoff of the progressive political organization Rockland United, said they were there to “stand in solidary with communities targeted by day one executive orders of the incoming administration.”
At the rally, which coincided with Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president, the only speeches delivered by attendees were those written and spoken by Martin Luther King Jr., who spent his life working on behalf of civil rights and is now recognized as one of the most influential and heroic Americans in the country’s history (hence the national holiday).
In an email to supporters, Indivisible Rockland (a member of the national Indivisible organization) said designed to bring light to how many of the new Republican administration’s executive orders take aim at curtailing the civil rights of multiple marginalized groups of people, including immigrants, LGBTQ folks and women.
On Feb. 10, Indivisible Rockland is hoping to build on the momentum of the rally and will be holding a general interest meeting at the Valley Cottage Library at 7 pm. (Full disclosure: Bill Batson, Vice President of Nyack News & Views, is on Indivisible Rockland’s steering committee.)
Our frosty and fabulous photographer Andrea Swenson documented all the peaceful communal action on that frigid Monday, including a woman holding a quote by Dr. King that read: “Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.”
