This week in the villages: Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal and state holiday, meaning closings of government and state offices, banks, post offices, and public schools. Hudson Link and Transport of Rockland (TOR) buses will operate on a regular weekday schedule, but Metro-North trains will operate on an enhanced Saturday schedule supplemented with additional trains. And paid 2020 Census workers are needed in Nyack, as are volunteers for the annual Point in Time Count in Rockland.

- The Nyack Branch of the NAACP will commemorate the legacy and dream of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at an annual interfaith service at 3p. Hosted by Reverend Willie L. Hairston, with a special message given by Pastor Gregory Merriweather of Haverstraw’s Cavalry Baptist Church. Pilgrim Baptist Church, 80 N Franklin St, Nyack. For more information, call 845-358-1497.
- The Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center, in collaboration with The East Ramapo Central School District, will sponsor a unity celebration honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The theme of this year’s event is “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Beyond Just a Dream.” The keynote speaker will be Dr. Anael Alston, Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Access, Equality, and Community Engagement. Various local artists will provide entertainment. 3-6p. Ramapo High School, 400 Viola Rd, Spring Valley.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Closures
Village Hall offices and the DPW will be closed on Mon, Jan 20 in observance of the holiday. Parking fees are suspended for the day. Alternate side parking remains in effect. Trash will be picked up on Tue, Jan 21.
2020 Census Workers Needed
Earn extra income by working for the 2020 Census in Nyack. There will be a hiring event at the Nyack Senior Center, 90 Depew Ave, Nyack, on Sat, Jan 25 and Sun, Jan 26 from 12-3p. There is no testing required. Visit nyack-ny.gov for more information.

Highway Department Christmas Tree Pickup Program
The Orangetown Highway Department will be picking up Christmas trees through Jan 31, 2020. Trucks will be working throughout Orangetown and will remove Christmas trees from the right-of-way on a street by street basis.
Rockland County
Volunteers Needed for Point in Time Count
The Rockland County Continuum of Care is looking for volunteers to assist with the Point in Time Count. Additionally, they’re looking for volunteer service providers such as barbers, hairdressers, nail technicians, physicians, or any provider willing to service homeless individuals that come in for the count.
The count will be held on Tue, Jan 28 (snowdate: Thurs, Jan 30). The count goes on for 24 hours, and assistance would be helpful at any time of day. There will be a mandatory informational and training session at 6:30p on Jan 22, at the Haverstraw Center, 50 West Broad St, Haverstraw. Lane Closures Near Bridge This Week and Next Week
Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) is scheduled to continue overhead gantry work on the bridge this week and next week. The work will require overnight lane closures on northbound and southbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) traffic lanes in the area. Specific lane closure times are listed in the chart below.

Bicycle/Pedestrian Path
Construction of the shared bicycle and pedestrian path continues. At the Rockland landing, construction continues along the side path, near the path’s underpass at South Broadway and by the Exit 10 off-ramp from the northbound Thruway.
