The Villages: Election Day, Aluf Updates

This week in the villages: If you haven’t taken advantage of early voting, Tuesday is  your last chance to cast your vote in local races. Aluf Plastics was recently found guilty of odor violations. The Rockland County Warming Center is now open and foster families are needed. And you can now purchase TOR bus tickets at the Nyack Village Hall.

Tuesday is general election day: The polls will be open from 6a to 9p. To find your poling place, visit the Rockland County Board of Elections.

In Nyack, Mayor Donald Hammond is running unopposed and Joe Carlin, Marie Lorenzini, and Elijah Reichlin-Melnick are vying for two village trustee seats. In South Nyack, Mayor Bonnie Christian and trustees Catherine McCue and Nancy Willen are running unopposed. In Piermont, Mayor Bruce Tucker is running unopposed and Mark Blomquist and Kelly Ruby are running unopposed for trustee. In Orangetown, Teresa Kenny is running against Thom Kleiner for Town Supervisor and Jerry Bottari, Paul Valentine, and Andrew Wiley are vying for two town council seats. In Clarkstown, Nicole Doliner is running against George Hoehmann for Town Supervisor, and Daniel Garcia, Mike Graziano, and Richard Tannembaum are vying for a town council seat in Ward 2. Harriet Cornell is running against Eric Meier for County Legislator in District 10 and James Foley is running against Nancy Low-Hogan for County Legislator in District 17.

Village of Nyack

Purchase TOR Bus Tickets at Village Hall

Transport of Rockland (TOR), Rockland County’s local bus system of 10 routes, provides service along major corridors, as well as with feeder loops within the county with connections to Clarkstown Mini Trans and other regional transit services such as the Hudson Link, Rockland Coaches (Red & Tan), Short Line, and NJ Transit trains. All TOR buses are wheelchair accessible. Tickets are now available at Village Hall, Monday – Friday, 9a-5p.

Employment Opportunities

The Village of Nyack is looking for a full-time Maintenance Equipment Operator at the DPW (CDL Required) and a part-time Code Enforcement Officer. Learn more about the requirements for these positions and how to apply at www.nyack-ny.gov.

Leaf Season 2019

The DPW will be picking up loose leaf piles from October through December 8, 2019 (or the first snowfall–whichever comes first). Leaf pick-up will occur during the work week, but generally not on Mondays or Thursdays. Learn more about how to prepare your leaves for removal at www.nyack-ny.gov.

Village of South Nyack

Leaf Collection

Loose leaves will be picked up in the village from Tue, October 15 through Fri, December 13 (weather permitting). Loose leaves should be placed in the gutter in a wind-row for pick-up by the DPW vacuum. The leaves must be free of sticks, rocks, and trash. It’s homeowners’ responsibility to inform their landscape contractor of village requirements.

Town of Orangetown

First Convictions of Aluf for Odor Violations

Orangetown Justice Court has found API Industries, Inc., better known as Aluf Plastics, guilty of violating Orangetown Town Code with respect to odor emissions on five separate occasions, the first convictions against Aluf Plastics with respect to odor emission. Sentencing is scheduled for November 26, 2019 at 11a.

Rockland County

The Inn Warming Center Opens

The Rockland County Warming Center is now open. The Inn will operate from November 1, 2019 through April 30, 2020. During this time, the center has 75 available beds and capacity for additional beds if needed. The Inn will open each night regardless of the temperature and remain open during the day when the temperature, including wind chill, is 32 degrees or below. The Inn offers showers and laundry facilities. Dinner and breakfast are provided for overnight guests and lunch is served during the day when the center is open. There is security on-site when the warming center is operational. In Nyack, there will be pickups at 6:45p and 8p in front of the First Reformed Church of Nyack at S Broadway and Burd St.

Foster Families Needed

Rockland County Executive Ed Day and Commissioner of Social Services Joan Silvestri announced that staff from the Rockland County Department of Social Services’ (DSS) Children’s Services Unit will join with local Wendy’s franchisees to celebrate National Adoption Month and to increase awareness of the need for foster families. For the eighth year in a row, staff will be available at Wendy’s restaurants in Nanuet and West Haverstraw to answer questions from residents interested in becoming foster/adoptive parents.

Residents interested in finding out more about becoming a foster parent can stop by Wendy’s at 90 E Rt 59 in Nanuet,  or 125 Rt 9W in West Haverstraw, on Wed, November 13, 2019, from 4 to 7p.

Mario Cuomo Bridge News

Lane Closures Near Bridge This Week

Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) is scheduled to continue roadway improvement operations near the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge this week. The work requires an overnight closure of southbound and northbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) traffic lanes. Specific lane closure times are listed in the chart below.

Bicycle/Pedestrian Path

Construction of the shared bicycle and pedestrian path continues. At the Rockland landing, construction continues along the side path and the path’s underpass at South Broadway.
