Nyack Weekender: Heat Wave Hoopla

Oh baby it’s…warm outside? With Sunday temps approaching 60 degrees, it’s a great weekend to enjoy live music (at the NHS Coffee House, the Union Arts Center or in the Carnegie Room), see a flick (Bridge of Spies or Salam Neighbor) or catch some pre-season baseball instruction with the Rockland Boulders. Here’s your Fri-Sun list of what to do and where to do it, brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland and the Union Arts Center in Sparkill.

Friday

• Celebrate film awards season with Oscar nominated film, Bridge of Spies. 1:30p at Palisades Free Library, 19 Closter Rd, Palisades.
• Attend the Nyack High School Coffee House showcasing the music of talented students. 7-9p at Nyack High School, 360 Christian Herald Rd.
• From Spirituals to Soul: A Musical Journey. The Carnegie Concert Series and The Friends of the Nyack Library present a concert featuring the Trinity Ensemble Choir with uplifting gospel music, Sam Waymon with soothing soulful tunes, and Shirley Crabbe with mesmerizing bluesy jazz. Suggested donation: $10. 7:30p at Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.
• The rock band Boxing The Needle plays originals and a blend of popular music that spans the decades. 10p at Unoodles, 14 Main St, Haverstraw.
• Bill Galanin performs at The Art Café, 9-11p. 65 South Broadway, Nyack.

Saturday

• Where We Are Standing: Contemporary Women Artists from Iran. Three artists who grew up in Iran before moving to North America share a strong cultural identity and a common focus on issues of gender and displacement shaped by the complex political and social landscape of their homeland. Featuring the work of Golnar Adili, Roya Farassat, and Shabnam K. Ghazi. Exhibit runs through April 24.  Wed-Sun 12-6p at the  Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.
• The Rockland Boulders host WinterBlast 2016 – a free, family-friendly event with baseball instruction, giveaways and Boulderbird. 11a-4p, St. Lawrence Center Bubble, Hillburn, NY.
• Pianist Matteo Cardelli performs works by Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann as part of the Ferrara International Piano Festival. 8p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union Ave, Sparkill.
• Sandy Connolly and The Turning Point present An Evening of Remembering and Celebration of Stefan Connolly with music by Carlos Colina and the StraightUp Blues Band at The Turning Point Café, 468 Piermont Ave, Piermont.

Sunday

• Salam Neighbor: A story by two filmmakers who lived in a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, providing an intimate look at the world’s most dire humanitarian crisis, seven miles from war where 85,000 Syrians struggle to restart their lives. 2p at the Fellowship of Reconciliation, 521 N Broadway, Nyack.
• Roddy Harrington performs Irish music from 4-7p at O’Malley’s, 108 Main St, Nyack.
• William Bruckner captured his hometown of Nyack in oil paints, watercolors, and drawings. The William Bruckner Centennial Exhibit is on display at The Historical Society of the Nyacks Museum and the Nyack Library. The museum is open Sundays from 1-4p, located behind the Nyack Library at 50 Piermont Avenue.
