Looking for a good book to read while relaxing at the beach, by the pool, in a hammock, or in your favorite chair? Summer’s not over and for the next month, we will feature some personal book recommendations from members of the Nyack Library staff. This week’s staff pick is The Goddess Pose: The Audacious Life of Indra Devi, the Woman Who Helped Bring Yoga to the West by Michele Goldberg.
When the woman who would become Indra Devi was born in Russia in 1899, yoga was virtually unknown outside of India. By the time of her death, in 2002, it was being practiced everywhere, from Brooklyn to Berlin to Ulaanbaatar. In The Goddess Pose, New York Times best-selling author Michelle Goldberg traces the life of the incredible woman who brought yoga to the West—and in so doing paints a sweeping picture of the twentieth century. According to Elizabeth Hobson, Technology and Outreach Department Head, “This is a fascinating biography of a Zelig-like woman who travels the world learing about and ultimately sharing the traditions of Yoga practice from India to the western world. The book reads like a novel and I look forward to sharing this one with my book group.”
