Main Street Got Flash Sketch Mobbed

On June 20th, over 70 artists formed a Flash Sketch Mob on Main Street. As part of a project inspired by the Google-style street view map, they constructed components of what will become a visual arts atlas of Nyack. This confluence of creatives, the second since 2012, did not allow periodic downpours to derail their efforts. After gathering at Weld Realty at 10a to receive their assigned section of the streetscape, collaborative art making took place from 11a – 1p. Despite the wet weather, each artist proceeded to a section of Main Street to create their portion of a collective landscape portrait of our village. I developed this long-term community media project with the assistance of artists and innovators Marisol Diaz and Ben Falchuk. Here is the work of Flash Sketch Mob 2015!

The Flash Sketch Mob would like to thank everyone who has shared talent, time, energy and artwork on June 20th. Artists and non-artists alike have helped support the vision of the project. Special thanks to Kris Burns, who produced and projected the work of the Flash Sketch Mob on equipment supplied by Rivertown Film and to Julie Colt, Nancy Eisen, Mimi Hoffman and Bonnie Timm for helping with the logistics of the day. The photos of the Flashmobbers are by Ray Wright and Stephanie Gagos. Thanks to Weld Realty, who also provided space, refreshments and the time of their staff and the Nyack Center for providing us shelter from the storm and a place to project the slide show at the end of the day. Thanks also to Butler, Bernstein and the Hot 9 for the soundtrack for the slide show.

Flash Sketch Mob was sponsored by ARTWALK 2015, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, Weld Realty, Customshirtplace.com, The Nyack Center, NyackNewsAndViews.com, Amarettogirl.com and billbatsonarts.com. This project is made possible in part with funds from the community arts grants program of the New York Council of Rockland and the New York State Council of the Arts with Support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Stay tuned for more Flash Sketch Mob events,

Bill Batson, Marisol Diaz and Ben Falchuk
