Dig This: Five Chances To Get Some Dirt on Nyack

Nyack June 1 — It’s Spring. Do you dig it?

There are still five plots available in the Nyack Community Garden. If you do “dig it,” Email NyackCommunityGarden@gmail.com or call Jack Dunnigan at (845) 358-9126. It’s first come, first serve!

Each year local residents tend 52 plots in the cooperative garden on South Franklin Street and Depew Avenue. Tools, soil and water are provided by Nyack Community Garden and plot-keepers supply their own plants and seeds. The land is courtesy of the Robert Martin Company.

Organizers estimate that a full plot (8’ x 20’) can generate enough herbs and vegetables for a family of four from April to November with some produce leftover to share. As a cooperative, plot-keepers are also expected to sign up for communal work. Beginners are welcome. The fee for a half plot is $15 and $20 for a full plot.

The Nyack Community Garden site was once the terminus of the railroad that connected Nyack to New York City via Hoboken. The property has been tilled as a community garden since 1976.
