Street Beat: Greenbush Rd / Rt 303 Bicycle Bypass

Greenbush Rd

Greenbush Road where it merges in to Rt 303 near Blauvelt State Park. Orangetown plans to build a short bypass through the woods to connect the north and south parts of Greenbush Rd.

Greenbush Road in Blauvelt is a lovely rural street that parallels Rt 303, a busy four lane highway in Orangetown. Greenbush Road is also a popular alternative for cyclists who want to ride north toward Nyack without having to compete with fast moving traffic. It’s bucolic…until the street merges into Rt 303 for about two blocks, forcing cyclists to “share the road” with cars traveling at 45+ mph.
Orangetown’s Rt 303 bike/pedestrian bypass will connect both parts of Greenbush Road via 1300 foot path that will run through the woods of Blauvelt State Park adjacent to Rt 303. The project is being financed with a $100,000 grant from the office of NYS Senator David Carlucci. On Tues March 6 at 630p, Orangetown hosts a public meeting at Orangetown Town Hall to discuss the project.

In 2003, 72 year old Robert Carl Pinckert was killed after being struck by a car near the intersection of Greenbush Rd and Rt 303 in Blauvelt. “He was under the truck. It was brutal,” said Orangetown Councilman Paul Valentine in the Journal News. His business, Valentine Electric, is adjacent to the crash site where Pinckert died. “From my office, I can see hundreds of bikers that come through this dangerous intersection every week. It was very important that we worked together to develop a solution.”

Here’s the official meeting announcement from Orangetown.com

The Town of Orangetown will be constructing a paved bicycle path on the east side of Route 303 that, when complete, will connect two ends of Greenbush Road in Blauvelt.
