South Nyack Nixes Spring Elections

Photo Credit: Kenyatta Jones-Arietta via InstagramSouth Nyack voters held their final March election on Tuesday, having voted decisively to move their annual elections to November. Just short of 60% of voters (209 out of 349) said Yes to holding the next South Nyack election in November, 2019.
The ballot question to move the election turned out two and a half more voters that the average number of voters in a South Nyack election since 2010 (141 votes). The lowest turnout in that period was 37 voters in 2012, followed by 54 votes in 2010. The median vote count was 75 votes; 2014 was the high water mark with 433 votes cast. From 201 through 2017, voter turnout averaged 16% higher in November than in March.
In addition to greater voter participation, village officials who advocated for this change said that holding local elections in November would reduce South Nyack’s costs while increasing voting hours because Rockland County would take over supervising future elections.
Trustees Alain Leinbach and Andrew Goodwillie and Village Justice Dennis Lynch ran unopposed and were re-elected during Tuesday’s vote.
