Nyack Marina Opens. New Restaurant Coming Soon

by Max Cea
The Nyack Marina is back and better than ever. The marina opened this month, marking the first time it has been open since Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012. Currently, it is sporting brand new electric-supported docks; soon a new fence and waterside picnic benches will be built.
None of the new renovations would have been possible without the FEMA money that Nyack received following Hurricane Sandy — those funds being a rare silver lining derived from the devastating storm. “Years ago, there was no way we could fix up this marina, which was falling apart, because it cost millions of dollars and we couldn’t even pave our roads at that point,” said Nyack Village Trustee Doug Foster. When Mayor Jen Laird White and Foster entered office, Nyack was crippled by its debt. “But we got about a million dollars in FEMA money from Hurricane Sandy — it cost about $2.6 mil to do all this — and insurance money from the previous hurricane.”
The Nyack Marina can accommodate 40 boats, with four additional transient spaces set aside. Currently, there are approximately 12 spaces remaining for reservation. Foster priced the dock spaces to prioritize Nyack residents. “I’ve priced it so that it’s less money for residents because most of the people here were from New Jersey and were just keeping their boats here,” said Foster. “We went through all this, it’s our marina, so if you’re a resident and want to keep your boat here, you should. A lot of people live here because they want to get on the river.”

The new renovations make this season an exciting time to get back onto the water. But the changes coming next spring will be even more profound. The village recently received a $195,000 grant to build a bridge between Memorial Park and the Marina. The village also recently gutted the building that previously held the River Club and plans to put out requests for proposals next month; they are searching for a new restaurant, one that will have an amicable relationship with the neighboring docks.
The River Club had been paying the village  $70,000 a year in rent. Naturally, village officials are eager to get the space back up and running. However, don’t expect any hasty decisions to be made. “We’re open to a well known operator or chef with its own draw or just a killer idea,” said Foster. “But hopefully whoever we get here, it’s going to be kickass, a huge draw… We want to have the restaurant catering to people coming in for a few hours, eating here. We want to attract people to come to Nyack by boat.”
