Discovering Identity: A Journey Through Adoption and
Heritage
Wednesday, August 26, 6:30 p.m., Valley Cottage Library, 110 Route 303, Valley Cottage
Local author and activist Bill Batson explores adoption and identity, exploring
family history, cultural roots, and the search for belonging. After years of investigation, Batson learned that his birth father was a member of a Kenyan family that organized the airlift that brought President Barack Obama’s father to the United States. Batson’s own father was part of this historic cultural exchange.
Batson reflects on two trips to Kenya to meet his father’s family and a visit to the Pacific Northwest to meet his mother and biological half brothers. Through photos, contemporaneous writing and drawings Batson offers a glimpse of his next work, which suggests many of us are on a journey guided by the hands of hidden ancestors.
