Our roundup of events this week includes the Nyack Art Collective’s First Friday, a watch party for the Knicks, the annual African American Day Parade, the Rockland Symphony Orchestra’s Rising Stars concert, and more.

Local residents, activists and politicians took part in Nyack’s 12th annual African American Day Parade and Festival.

Nyack Art Collective’s First Friday

The Nyack Art Collective, an organization of over 80 talented visual artists from the Nyack area, has a members’ art exhibit and monthly First Friday event.

Live in person meet and greet with NY Knick Point Guard Chris Childs. Autograph, tee-shirt and photo included in admission fee. Cash bar.

Nyack’s 16th Annual African American Day Parade and Festival

Saturday, June 6 (June 13 rain date), parade starts at noon at Nyack Memorial Park, 4 Depew Ave, Nyack

The parade leaves Memorial Park proceeding west on Depew Avenue to Franklin Street, north to Main Street, east to Broadway, south to Depew then returning to the park.

Parade Marshalls are: Nikki Hines, Vivian England and the Hon. Toney Earl.

The festival following the parade included entertainment, vendors, food, music, face painting and more.

Jewish Voices Series: Maira Kalman In Conversation with Ross Benjamin

Maira Kalman was born in Tel Aviv and moved to New York City with her family at the age of four. Maira has written/illustrated over 30 books for adults and children. She has been a frequent contributor to The New York Times and The New Yorker. She has created textiles for Isaac Mizrahi and Kate Spade and sets for Mark Morris. Other collaborations have been with Nico Muhly, Alex Kalman, Michael Pollan, David Byrne, John Heginbotham and Gertrude Stein. 

Ross Benjamin is a translator of German-language literature. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his translation of Franz Kafka’s Diaries, and he was awarded the Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize for his rendering of Michael Maar’s Speak, Nabokov. His translation of Daniel Kehlmann’s Tyll was shortlisted for the 2020 International Booker Prize.

Casual Fridays at Homebody Books and Toys

Drop in for some quiet time reading, listening, or working with our hands, together! Summer Chapter Book promo—buy three new or vintage chapter books before Labor Day, get a fourth vintage book free (after “reporting” on your favorite book in a few sentences or a drawing for display!) Learn a New Craft—Bring a project or purchase select kits at 10% off and work together. Join a Listening Party—Experience a star-studded audio recording of The Hobbit; or create art inspired by hearing aloud the poems of Emily Dickinson (materials fee for beeswax crayons and paper, $20). Gather some friends and call the shop to schedule (minimum 2). Our craft box will also be available for the littles to create (nominal donation). Children 7 and up may stay at the shop without a parent if comfortable.

Rockland Pride Sunday

Sunday, June 14, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Downtown Nyack

Nyack will be full of Pride for this FREE, family-friendly event featuring music of David Budway and special guest performers, local drag artists, outdoor dining, shopping, and vendors!

Free bounce house, face painting, and children’s activities offered at Nyack Center.

Parade steps off at 11:15 a.m.

Woody Guthrie and the Ghost of Tom Joad Today, A Rivertown Film 25th Anniversary Event

Monday, June 15, 8 p.m., Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave, Nyack

Every dollar earned tonight will go toward Rivertown Film’s newly established Cash Reserve Fund, and all of it will be matched by a generous gift from former board members Barrie Peterson and Bea Conner-Peterson.

This is the first preview anywhere for Greg Mitchell’s acclaimed new film, narrated by Rosanne Cash, Woody Guthrie and the Ghost of Tom Joad Today, with a song by Bruce Springsteen.

Mitchell will present over thirty minutes of excerpts from this timely film for the first time to a public audience and will lead a discussion with Woody’s granddaughter Anna Canoni, president of Woody Guthrie Publications, and Daniel Wolff, author of Grown-Up Anger: The Connected Mysteries of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, and the Calumet Massacre of 1913.

A second world premiere, of a very short film Woody and Me, will feature tributes to Woody Guthrie from Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Mavis Staples and many others.

There will be musical guests as well, with Tom Chapin, The Chapin Sisters, and  the All Together Now Chorus.  And there will be a community singout on This Land Is Your Land—which some consider our real national anthem­.

Woody Guthrie and the Ghost of Tom Joad will air over PBS stations later this summer.

“Hopper’s Way” Summer Solstice and Anniversary Dinner

Sunday, June 21,  5:30  – 9 p.m., 82 N Broadway (in front of the museum), Nyack

Celebrate the Summer Solstice and Father’s Day as we close North Broadway (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues) to open Hopper’s Way” for an unforgettable, open-air community feast and dining experience .

Neighbors, artists, and patrons will gather at a grand, continuous table to honor the riverside village that shaped a young Edward Hopper’s eye and art, and to pay tribute to Win Perry, the legendary preservationist who helped save and restore the Hopper House for future generations. As dusk falls, the streetscape will transform Hopper-inspired façade projections by artist Kris Burns.

Rendering River Hook – Sketch & Scribe Mob

Saturday, June 27, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Reception – Sunday, June 28, 3 – 5 p.m., 626 N Broadway, Nyack

“Rendering River Hook” will be a collective landscape appreciation session, rendering the essence of River Hook through words or imagery, guided by Bill Batson. Bring your chair, art supplies and/or writing supplies and set up at an assigned spot along the River Hook Preserve path. Your resulting work will be displayed during the reception the following day. Advance registration and a small fee are required:
