In Advance of Trump Visit, Rockland Leaders Call Out Administration’s ‘Moral Failure’

Local nonprofit, faith, civil rights and Democratic leaders gathered in New City to protest President Trump’s visit to help Rockland County Congressman Mike Lawler’s tight race. (All photos by Andrea Swenson — scroll down for a full slideshow from the event.)

Standing in the shadow of a downtown New City statue of Thurgood Marshall, the country’s first Black Supreme Court Justice and a symbol of human rights in America, local nonprofit, faith, civil rights and Democratic leaders came out to protest Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Rockland County Community College on Friday to campaign for Congressman Mike Lawler.

According to lohud, the rally and press conference was designed to bring light to Trump’s poor record on protecting civil rights, his weaponization of the Justice Department and other misdeeds, as well as highlight Lawler’s complicity, despite the congressman’s claims of being bipartisan.

Lawler faces a tough re-election campaign against whoever makes it out of the Democratic primary on June 23. One of those contenders, Nyack resident Beth Davidson, was on hand, along with several other local leaders and officials.

Dana Stilly, a county legislator who represents parts of Orangetown and Clarkstown, called the Trump administration’s efforts a “moral failure,” while The Rev. Carl Washington of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Nyack said the Trump era had produced “rough and dangerous times.”

Meanwhile, Lawler spokesman Scott Waters told lohud, “There are many in Rockland who are excited to hear from President Trump.” Waters said they are expecting some 5,000 people to attend the event for Trump, which kicks off in the early afternoon and caused local schools to close early due to related traffic concerns.

Our very own commander in photographical chief Andrea Swenson was on hand to capture it all in her latest Photo Shoot. Enjoy!
