SPOTLIGHT: “FUGS FILM!” at Rivertown Film, April 22, 8:00 p.m.

Formed in New York’s bohemian Lower East Side in 1964, the Fugs were poet musicians who didn’t just reflect their time, they nurtured it. Using musical satire to explore boundaries of free speech and antagonize the establishment, they ignited an idea that was soon taken up by groups including The Mothers of Invention, and Country Joe and the Fish.

The Fugs were founded by Ed Sanders, a principal figure of the sixties counterculture and proprietor of the Peace Eye Bookstore in the East Village, along with fellow poet and artist Tuli Kupferberg, who was immortalized in Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl,” and drummer Ken Weaver. Their music connected a folkie ethos to rock and roll and sound collage; their story is from a wildly unusual time and place that still resonates. Despite their sometimes outrageous lyrics, the Fugs released many records on major labels of the day, including Folkways, Atlantic, and Reprise. Buy tickets

The director, Chuck Smith, and co-producer, Myles Aronowitz, will appear in person to discuss the film with moderator Kristi Zea.

Nat Fein: A Talent for Living
A film by Frank LoBuono

April 16, 6:30 p.m.

Most people don’t know Nat Fein’s name, but they know his work. Fein captured one of the most iconic images in American sports history: Babe Ruth’s final appearance at Yankee Stadium, a photograph that earned Fein the 1949 Pulitzer Prize.

This documentary, made by Nyack resident Frank LoBuono, tells the story of a self-made photojournalist working during the golden age of journalism, whose career at the New York Herald Tribune earned him more NY Press Photographers Association awards than any of his peers. Through interviews, the film explores Fein’s lasting influence on generations of photographers. More than a photographer, he was a singer, an artist, and a person who brought joy to others — a man who truly had a talent for living. This is his remarkable, largely untold story. Free, but please reserve your seat.
