Last Thursday, on a beautiful, sunny evening, the Village of Nyack held its annual 9/11 Memorial Remembrance.
Billed as a tribute to Nyack’s “Hometown Heroes,” the event highlighted the lives of six locals — three who died in the terrorist attacks (Jon Albert, Welles Crowther, and Stacy MacGowan) on the Twin Towers, two first responders who died of 9/11-related illnesses (Joseph Stach, Jr. and Harry Wanamaker) years after the attacks, and one man (Ross T. Daily II) who led the county’s utility company’s response at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks and died in 2021.
Featuring an American flag and shiny red fire trucks, the remembrance included opening remarks by Nyack Mayor Joe Rand and Nicole Stroud, a prayer by Bishop Ron Stringfield, songs from Alessandra Francisco and Rita Harvey, a rifle salute from the American Legion Post 310 Color Guard, and a rendition of Taps by Nyack High School’s Nathan Wright.
