Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of World War II’s end, New York’s Swingtime Big Band returns to Nyack’s long-running Free Music on the Hudson summer concert series to perform a joyous mix of Big Band classics and popular tunes from the Great American Songbook.

This high-powered 20-piece band vividly recreates hits from the Swing Era and beyond, including chart-toppers by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Les Brown. Plus, Swingtime’s two entertaining vocalists salute some of our most iconic singers, including Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, and Frank Sinatra, along with a 100th birthday tribute to the legendary Sammy Davis, Jr. The July 22 concert is also being held on the 144th birthday of another American standard of this era, Edward Hopper.

Please join us to say “Thank You!” to The Greatest Generation, as we offer this uniquely American music that defined an entire era, and which is still instantly recognized around the world as “Made in the USA!”

Rivertown Film Presents Secret Mall Apartment

Wednesday, July 23, 8:00pm, The Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave, Nyack

In 2003, eight young Rhode Islanders created a secret apartment in a hidden space inside the Providence Place Mall and lived in it for four years, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture, tapped into the mall’s electricity, and even secretly constructed a brick wall with a locking door, smuggling in over 2 tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for all its inhabitants – a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification, a boundary-pushing work of public/private art, and finally, a 750 square foot space that sticks it to the man!

Meet the Filmmaker: director Jeremy Workman will discuss Secret Mall Apartment with Vera Aronow, co-director of Megamall (2009), the story of the almost twenty year struggle to stop the construction of the Palisades Center in West Nyack, which is currently facing foreclosure.
