On Monday, May 26, there was a powerful Memorial Day ceremony held on a hilly wedge of green land carved amid the gargantuan Palisades Mall near Dick’s Sporting Goods, in West Nyack.
The ceremony paid “respects to the veterans buried at Mount Moor Cemetery and the land that gives them eternal slumber,” according to a press release. Mount Moor is a historic cemetery for local African Americans that was spared (after a long fight) from being subsumed by the Palisades Mall and includes “the narratives of men and women who survived oppression, 32 of whom fought in uniform, are etched in stone, that is not so easily erased.”
Honored during this year’s ceremony were Jacqueline Smith Anderson, Lois E. Butler and Sandra Oby, all widows of veterans.
The keynote speaker was Susan Branham, the director of the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency.
Fortunately, our memorable photographer Andrea Swenson was there to document these new Memorial Day memories in our latest edition of Photo Shoot! (Scroll down for more photos and full slideshow)
