That Kid, Directed by Ashley Dawson, Produced by Brooklyn Demme

Rivertown Film presents the east-coast premiere of That Kid, the first feature film of Ashley Dawson. That Kid premiered at the LA Underground Railroad Film Festival on April 17.
Some recognizable Rockland County faces form the cast of the coming of age drama including attorney and Spring Valley resident L’Tanya Watkins, social media influencer and Nyack resident Max Tassey, and artist and Nyack resident Kris Burns
Set in The Village of Nyack, familiar locations include the Nyack Center, Nyack Senior Housing and Upper Nyack Elementary School.
Hip Hop artist, A-Guss appears on screen as an actor, but contributed to the soundtrack as well.
After the film, stay for a discussion with filmmaker Ashley Dawson, Nyack NAACP President Nicole Hines, and attorney L’Tanya Watkins.

About Ashley Dawson
Ashley Dawson is an advocate for political justice and community empowerment, holding a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from South Carolina State University (HBCU). She is a member of the Nyack 2030 Climate Committee in Nyack, NY. Dawson is deeply involved in various advocacy groups, including Voices of Rockland, Ending the New Jim Crow, and the NAACP, where she serves as Assistant Treasurer.
She is also the president of the Justice and Nurses Ministries at Pilgrim Baptist Church. Her contributions to community service have been recognized with several accolades, including a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from the United States House of Representatives and commendations from the NAACP and various municipalities in Rockland County.
As a filmmaker and co-founder of Truth 2 Power, a production company focused on bridging community, education, and film. Dawson aims to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities through storytelling.
Dawson wrote, directed and executive produced her debut effort. The producer, cinematographer, and Editor was Brooklyn Demme. Norris Spotted War Turtle Branham served as Co-Producer
About Brooklyn Demme
Brooklyn Demme learned to love movies as both a viewer and filmmaker from his dad Jonathan. He co-founded Truth 2 Power with Ashley Dawson in 2020 to bring people together at the intersection of community education and film. Through film productions and educational programs Brooklyn is thankful for the chance to create work that unifies and inspires. As an actor Brooklyn has enjoyed learning from the direction of Paul Thomas Anderson in One Battle After Another (2025) and of Ashley Dawson in That Kid (2025).

The Nyack Branch of the NAACP will hold their 66th Annual fundraising gala under the leadership of branch president Nicole Hines on Thursday, April 24 beginning at 6:00pm at the Crowne Plaza in Suffern.
Lester W. Young is the first Black Chancellor in the 237 year history of the New York State Board of Regents and fierce proponent of diversity, equity and inclusion programs during the Trump era to be keynote speaker at Nyack Branch NAACP Freedom Gala.
Past speakers include Ambassador Andrew Young, the late Congressman John Lewis, New York State Attorney General Tish James.
The 2025 honorees include Elizabeth Santiago, Center for Safety & Change, Kira Davenport , Nyack HeadStart, and Johnsie Valdez, Nyack Center.

Karen Finley Presents COVID Vortex Anxiety Opera Kitty Kaleidoscope Disco

Karen Finley is an artist, performer, and poet. Born in Chicago, she received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Finley was the named plaintiff for the Supreme Court case Finley v. NEA that challenged the decency provision in government grants to artists through the National Endowment for the Arts.
Her work has been presented internationally at the Barbican in London; Lincoln Center, New York City; Art Basel in Miami; and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, among others. She is the author of ten books, including COVID Vortex Anxiety Opera Kitty Kaleidoscope Disco (forthcoming from City Lights, 2025) Grabbing Pussy (OR Books, 2018), the 25th anniversary edition of Shock Treatment (City Lights, 2015), and The Reality Shows (Feminist Press, 2011). A recipient of many awards and grants, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, she is a professor in Art and Public Policy at New York University. She lives in Westchester County, New York.

The ArtsRock Annual Fundraising Gala featuring John Turturro In Conversation with Elliott Forrest

Emmy-award winning actor JOHN TURTURRO will be the featured guest at the 2025 ArtsRock Gala. He is the veteran actor of stage, television and some of the most acclaimed films over the last decades, including The Big Lebowski, Do the Right Thing, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Quiz Show, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, Jungle Fever, Five Corners, and The Batman.
Turturro has directed six films, including Mac, which won the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. On stage, Turturro won an Obie for Danny and the Deep Blue Sea and appeared in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, End Game and Sabbath’s Theater. On television, Turturro won an Emmy for his role on Monk and starred in HBO’s The Night Of and The Plot Against America. He is currently seen on season 2 of Apple’s series Severance.
Mr. Turturro will discuss his life and career with Peabody award-winning Broadcaster, Producer and ArtsRock Executive Artistic Director, Elliott Forrest.

Remember, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time when Center for Safety & Change staff work tirelessly to both support victims and survivors and raise public awareness about sexual violence.

People who create are inspirations to us all. But what inspires them? Find out at Rivertown Film’s Inspired! on Saturday, May 3. Support our future by attending our signature fundraising event.
On May 3, sixteen local artists in varied disciplines, including our own Bill Batson, share the sources of their inspiration, each using ten slides and twenty seconds per slide to explain them. Join us for a fast-paced night of creativity and enjoy the many ways that artists find inspiration. The doors open at 7:30 and the program begins at 8:00. Arrive early for complimentary hors d’oeuvres and to give yourself time to look over our silent auction items and raffles. A second round of food and beverages will be available when the Inspired performers have finished.
