The Land: Early Artists @ Gate Hill Co-op

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 19, 1:00-4:00pm

Through his studies with Buckminster Fuller at Black Mountain College, and later with Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, at Harvard University, Paul Williams envisioned an environment that would cultivate an affordable, progressive, communal lifestyle, deeply supportive of artists and art making. Other artist friends and acquaintances (many connected to Black Mountain College) soon joined the community, among them, Sari Dienes, Johanna VanDerBeek, and the filmmaker, Stan VanDerBeek. Working alongside Williams and his building crew, members of the community participated in the construction of their own homes. Sharing their artistic pursuits and raising families there, these luminaries of the avant-garde would come to redefine the intersections of art, life, and culture. Together, they helped realize Paul and Vera Williams’ vision in the creative development of the Gate Hill Cooperative, also known as The Land.

The exhibit runs through November 23 at Rockland Center for the Arts, 27 South Greenbush Rd, West Nyack.

Wunderkind: Carson McCullers, a film by Claudia Müller

Wednesday, October 23, 8:00pm, presented by the Rivertown Film Society at the Nyack Center

With her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, Carson McCullers became a star of the New York literary scene and a celebrated child prodigy in the spring of 1940. At just 23 years of age, the author, who was born in Georgia, published a novel that gave outsiders in her society a voice and became a global success. The writer, who only lived to the age of 50 and suffered from serious illnesses throughout her life, left behind a relatively small but powerful oeuvre.

This film aims to bring to light the work of the most famous unknown in American literature.

Carson McCullers lived in Nyack from 1945 to her death in 1967. She is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

There will be a discussion after the film with director Claudia Müller and producer Nick Norwood, who is also the executive director of the McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians.
