This special July 4th edition of the Weekly Rec features an Open House and Historic Tour of Oak Hill Cemetery, July 4th events including Nyack Farmers Market Customer Appreciation Day and fire works off of Memorial Park.

Open House and Historic Tours at Oak Hill Cemetery

Saturday, June 29th 10:00am – 4:00pm Oak Hill Cemetery, 140 North Highland

On June 29, 2024, The Board of Trustees of Oak Hill Cemetery will hold an open house for their newly constructed community mausoleum. The public is welcome to tour the resplendent structure that features elegant marble crypts, glass and marble cremation niches and world class stained glass produced by the Conrad Pickel Studio of Vero Beach, FL.

The Open House will also offer public tours of the notable figures who lay in eternal slumber at Oak Hill conducted by the Historical Society of the Nyacks. Enjoy sweeping vistas of the Hudson River and light refreshments and meet cemetery staff and Board of Trustee members from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Historical tours are scheduled for noon and 2:00pm.

The Mausoleum of Oak Hill is a  4,600 square foot state of the art facility holding 476 crypts and 1076 niches. There are 5 separate pieces of magnificent stained glass consisting of 2 windows and the gable window in the front along with stained glass surrounding both front doors, framing a majestic view of the Hudson River.

Traster’s documentary films have played in festivals worldwide; Catnip Nation garnered several awards. Her written work and photography have appeared in scores of newspapers, magazines, blogs, and literary journals including The New York Times, The New York Post, Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, The Atlantic, The Federalist, Redbook, Family Circle, Parade, Time Out New York, Audubon, Ski Magazine, and many others. She is the author of the award-winning memoir Rescuing Julia Twice: A Mother’s Tale of Russian Adoption and Overcoming Reactive Attachment Disorder. Since 2006, Traster wrote the long-running “Burb Appeal” column for The New York Post.

Nyack Farmers Market Holds Customer Appreciation Day

July 4, 8:00am – 2:00pm Nyack’s Main Muncipal Parking Lot

On July Fourth, the Nyack Chamber of Commerce celebrates the community of families that supports the Nyack Farmers Market with a Customer Appreciation Day. Every Thursday, year-round, from 8:00am – 2:00pm residents of Nyack shop with the 30+ vendors who provide fresh, locally produced food and unique services. On July 4th, from 11am – 1pm all are invited to enjoy a plate of summer fare and a beverage.

There will be music by Ian Moore and friends and classic dance music by DJ Preston Powell, owner of Teagevity.

July 4th Fireworks in Nyack

9:00pm, Memorial Park, Nyack

Enjoy spectacular fireworks at Memorial Park on the Hudson River! The pyrotechnic display will be launched from a river barge, delicious food trucks, live DJ music and plenty of family fun starting at 5:00pm. Fireworks show begins at 9:00pm

FREE parking in the lots and on street for the holiday. Arrive early for the best spots! Handicap parking will be available along Piermont Avenue at the top of Memorial Park.

Brooklyn Demme screens Mountain Lion to Benefit Ashley Dawson

On Friday July 26, Rockland County filmmaker Brooklyn Demme will share his debut fictional feature film at the Cultural Arts Theatre of Rockland Community College. Mountain Lion: Healing Film of St. Francis is an intense drama about personal relationships, mental health, and family dynamics, that uses magical realism to express mindfulness in intimate relationships and seriousness in prayer. It was entirely shot in Rockland County.

The Sandhill Band of Lenape & Cherokee Indians, Rivertown Film, TurtleGang Edutainment, and Truth 2 Power, are offering a free screening to promote and benefit That Kid, the upcoming debut fictional film of Truth 2 Power co-founder and producer of Mountain Lion, Ashley Dawson.

Registration is required in order to secure seating, and any donations given at registration or at the screening will be directed to the production of That KidREGISTER HERE. If you do not receive a confirmation email, you have not successfully registered. Names of everyone who registers will be at the door. You do not need to bring a printout or show your receipt on your phone.
