Bryan Burrell and Elaine Philhower elected to Nyack’s School Board

The $107 million budget was also approved.

Nyack residents elected Bryan Burrell and Elaine Philhower as trustees to the Board of Education on Tuesday after a campaign “marked by vitriol” and “focused on accomodations” for LBTQ+ students,” according to Patch.

The $107 million budget was also approved, according to the outlet.

Four people ran for the two open seats; the unsuccessful candidates were Violet Merjanian and Scott Nappi.

Bryan Burrell, an educational consultant and former teacher, served on the board previously, including as president. He stepped down due to the toll on his well-being but campaigned on the idea that he wouldn’t run again unless it was really important.

Elaine Philhower, a former music teacher at Liberty elementary who ran an unsuccessful campaign for Clarkstown town council last year, said she was “stepping up” because the board needed someone with educational experience.

Philhower, who retired in 2020, and Burrell were the only candidates with teaching experience.
