Weekly Rec: “Men Cooking” To Support Nyack Center

“Men Cooking” is back! Support their well-intentioned and well-seasoned efforts on Sunday, June 12.

In my house growing up, my mom cooked 90 percent of our family meals. She learned basic skills and recipes from her mother, a small-town Wisconsin homemaker, and honed her technique through years of practice, reading and constantly tinkering. My mom is the best cook I know.

On the rare occasion when my mom took time for herself or needed to attend a work event, my dad was tasked with feeding the three of us picky-eating kiddos. It wasn’t always pretty — his specialty was an oddly colored and abnormally textured casserole made from everything left in the fridge — but he got the job done. We survived.

This weekend, local men — dads, grandpas, sons, brothers — will be doing more than just getting the job done. At the 19th annual “Men Cooking” food-tasting event, dudes of all shapes and sizes will be competing for best main course, best appetizer, best dessert, best children’s dish and best side dish.

The event is Sunday, June 12, from 5 to 7 pm, at the Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave., and proceeds will benefit its indispensable programming.

You can purchase tickets in advance online and at the Center, and at the event: $20 for adults, $10 for children (10 and under), and $50 for a family.

For other are events, like the Rockland Pride Sunday (also on Sunday), go to Visit Nyack.
