Weekly Recommendation: Play Ball!

This Saturday brings yet another sign of spring and the waning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Both are more than welcome.

A couple of weeks ago, we enjoyed a Nyack SpringFest for the first time since 2019. On Saturday, April 30, we will see it in the waves of cute kids in ill-fitting uniforms marching to Liberty Field for a day of baseball, hot dogs and good, old-fashioned fun (yes, it still exists!).

Two years ago, Covid ended the Nyack Valley Cottage Little League season before it even started. Last year, the league put together a successful season, but wasn’t in a position to hold a large public gathering.

But Saturday, the Opening Day Parade is back and better than ever, according to Commissioner John Welch (and your humble narrator, who, in the interest of full disclosure, happens to be on the board).

The parade begins at 9 am on Lake Road in Valley Cottage. Our little sluggers will march (meander) their way from Belleville Road straight into Liberty Field. After a celebration ceremony, the fun ensues, with a full slate of games (at Liberty and Hemlock), food and festivities. There will be concessions, BBQ and a dunk tank.

Spring is back! Baseball is back! Feel free to have fun!

For more details on the parade, go to the league website.
