The Villages: Thanksgiving Week 2021

This week in the villages: Thursday is Thanksgiving, meaning changes in transportation schedules, trash and recycling pick-ups, and the Nyack Farmers’ Market (which moves to Wednesday). South Nyack is holding a Board of Trustees meeting and two public hearings.  A new dog park opened in the Town of Orangetown.

Thanksgiving Holiday Bus, Train Schedules

Hudson Link will run its weekend schedule on Thanksgiving Day, Thurs, Nov 25, 2021 and a regular schedule on Fri, Nov 26.

On Wed, Nov 24, 2021, Metro-North will operate a weekday schedule plus an early getaway train at 1:50p with service to Tarrytown and Ossining stations. Metro-North Hudson Line trains will operate special trains on Thursday for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The time table is a Sunday schedule, with additional early trains to Grand Central, and additional trains from Grand Central in late morning and early afternoon. On Fri, Nov 26, 2021, Metro-North will operate a special schedule based on a Saturday schedule, but with some extra trains.

On Thanksgiving, Transport of Rockland (TOR) buses 59, 91, 92, 93, and Loop 3 will operate on a Sunday schedule; there will be no service on buses 94, 94, and 97; and Loop 1 and Loop 2 will operate on a weekday schedule. On Friday, Nov 26, TOR will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

And on Thanksgiving and Fri, Nov 26, TRIPS paratransit buses will operate A.D.A. service only. Further information for Thanksgiving holiday transportation schedules may be found on rocklandgov.com.

Village of Nyack

Thanksgiving Sanitation Schedule

Nyack Village Hall and DPW will be closed on Thurs, Nov 25 and Fri, Nov 26, 2021 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Trash will be collected on Mon, Nov 22 and Wed, Nov 24, 2021. Recycling will be collected on Fri, Nov 26, 2021.

Leaf Collection

Residents imust keep leaves out of roadways to comply with town codes and state traffic laws.

Loose leaf piles should be placed on homeowner’s property and not on sidewalks or in the roadway. DPW will be picking up leaves now through Dec 10, 2021. Leaves may be placed in biodegradable paper bags or left loose in a pile on homeowner’s property. Consider mulching leaves as a sustainable approach to landscaping.

Other residential yard waste may be dropped off at the Clarkstown Yard Waste Facility, 166 S Rt 303. This facility is open to all.

Broadway Streetscape Project Update

Work resumed last week on the N Broadway sidewalk between High Ave and First Ave. DOT approved changes to reduce the slope of the sidewalk, yet maintain an ADA compliant sidewalk. No other sidewalk work will take place over the winter months. Work will resume as early in the spring as the weather allows. 

The median island on N Broadway has been removed at the discretion of the Village Board. A redesigned “bump-out” crosswalk will be constructed in this area in the Spring 2022. At this time the Village is waiting for DOT approval on the redesign of this area. Updates will be posted as they become available.

Village of South Nyack

The Board of Trustees will hold a meeting and public hearings on Tue, Nov 23, 2021 at 7:30p. A livestream of the meeting will be available on the Village of South Nyack Facebook page.

Notice of Public Hearings

A Public Hearing will be held by the Board of Trustees of the Village of South Nyack at Village Hall, 282 S Broadway on Tue, Nov 23, 2021, at 7:30p regarding a Local Law related to: Amending Article VII Section 310 of the Code of the Village of South Nyack to Impose a No Parking, No Standing, and No Stopping Restriction on Cedar Hill Ave, North Side, West of South Franklin St. The full text of the proposed law is on file in the Village Clerk’s office and may be reviewed by interested persons on southnyack.ny.gov and is posted on the outside bulletin boards at Village Hall. The Board of Trustees will hear at said time and place all persons in support of this local law and any objections thereto. Interested parties may appear in person or by agent or representative.

There will also be a Public Hearing which will be held by the Board of Trustees of the Village of South Nyack at Village Hall, 282 S Broadway on Tue, Nov 23, 2021, at 7:45p regarding a Local Law related to: Amending the Zoning Map of Chapter 330 of the Zoning Law of the Village of South Nyack to Change the Zoning District of Certain Property in the Village of South Nyack. The full text of the proposed law is on file in the Village Clerk’s office and may be reviewed by interested persons on southnyack.ny.gov and is posted on the outside bulletin boards at Village Hall. The Board of Trustees will hear at said time and place all persons in support of this local law and any objections thereto. Interested parties may appear in person or by agent or representative.

Village of Upper Nyack

Notice of Continued Public Hearing

The Board of Trustees of the Village of Upper Nyack adjourned the public hearing to consider an Application for a Temporary Moratorium Variance, 350 North Highland Avenue, Village of Upper Nyack (SBL 59.16-2-3 (Upper Nyack)) until December 16, 2021. Application for a variance from the temporary moratorium on land use applications, including special use permit applications, for the subject property, which is located on Route 9W in the OB (Office Business) Zoning District (see Local Laws 1 of 2020 and 3 of 2020 as extended),  to allow the applicant to pursue the necessary land use approvals to use the subject property as a school.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Village Board of Trustees will not be meeting in person. In accordance with Chapter 417 of the Laws of 2021 signed by the New York State Governor Kathy Hochul suspending certain provisions of the New York State Open Meetings Law, the meeting will be held via videoconferencing, and a transcript will be provided at a later date. The public will have the opportunity to see and hear the meeting live and provide comments.

A meeting agenda, plans, application materials, and other information will be posted on uppernyack-ny.us in advance of the meeting. Copies of the applications are available for public inspection in Village Hall during regular business hours, 9a-12p.

Public Notice of Village of Upper Nyack Election Offices to Be Filled

Two two-year trustee offices are vacant at the end of the current official year and are to be filled at the Village election to be held on Tue, Mar 15, 2022.

Town of Orangetown

Dog Park Opens

Last week Orangetown officially opened the first dog park for two and four legged residents. For those of you who were unable to attend the grand opening, you can watch it on Facebook Live. The dog park is located at Veterans Memorial Park, 81 Hunt Rd, Orangeburg. A list of rules may be found on orangetown.com.

Rockland County

Flu Vaccine Clinic

The Rockland County Health Department is holding flu vaccine clinics for the 2021-2022 flu season on various dates and locations. This clinic is for everyone 6 months and older.

Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome at all clinics. There is a $20 fee for those 6 months through 64 years old: cash or check accepted. For those with private health insurance, we will provide you with a receipt to submit to your health insurance for possible reimbursement. To make the process quicker, please print and bring the completed 2021-2022 FLU VACCINE FORM with you.

The vaccine is free of charge if you:

  • are 65 years and older (please bring identification with proof of age)
  • have Medicare or Medicaid (please bring your card)
  • are uninsured or underinsured

The Health Department is giving the quadrivalent flu vaccine, which does not contain preservatives, including thimerosal. For more information about the flu and the flu vaccine clinics visit rocklandgov.com or call 845-364-2534.
