The Villages: Register for Winter Rec, Summer Park Help Needed

This week in the villages: Don’t miss out. There’s still time to register for the Village of Nyack Winter Rec classes, which start on Tuesday. And if you like working outdoors, summer help is needed in Memorial Park.

Winter 2020 Recreation Classes

It’s your last chance to register for Winter 2020 Recreation Programs, including Gym Games, Introduction to Piano, Paper Cutting Arts, T(w)een Yoga & Floating Meditation, and Yoga for Student Athletes. Classes start Tue, Jan 28.

Summer Employment

If you like to work outdoors, the Village of Nyack is hiring summer help for Memorial Park. You should be comfortable with managing crowds and directing traffic. You must be at least 18 years of age with a clean driver’s license. There will be a pre-employment drug screening. Applications are available at Village Hall.

Military Tribute Banners

It’s time to order your Military Tribute Banners for 2020. These make a beautiful tribute to honor your veterans, active-duty, reserve, and National Guard members. Community Choice Aggregation (CCA)

In case you missed the other Community Choice Aggregation informational meetings, you can stop by the Clarkstown Town Hall Lobby, 10 Maple Ave, New City on Tue, Jan 28 and Thurs, Jan 30 from 10a-3p for Community Office Hours to learn more about this program.

Town of Orangetown

Highway Department Christmas Tree Pickup Program

The Orangetown Highway Department will be picking up Christmas trees through Jan 31, 2020. Trucks will be working throughout Orangetown and will remove Christmas trees from the right-of-way on a street by street basis.

Rockland County

Volunteers Needed for Point in Time Count

The Rockland County Continuum of Care is looking for volunteers to assist with the Point in Time Count. Additionally, they’re looking for volunteer service providers, such as barbers, hairdressers, nail technicians, physicians, or any provider willing to service homeless individuals that come in for the count.

The count will be held on Tue, Jan 28 (snowdate: Thurs, Jan 30). The count goes on for 24 hours, and assistance would be helpful at any time of day. There will be a mandatory informational and training session at 6:30p on Jan 22, at the Haverstraw Center, 50 West Broad St, Haverstraw. Save the Dates – Community Emergency Response Team Classes are Returning

Rockland County residents age 14 and older can be part of the Rockland Community Emergency Response Team (RCERT), a reserve task force, mobilized at times of crisis or disaster to free up the county’s professional first responders. There are no special requirements for applicants, and they can be certified after taking eight prescribed classes. Members set up and operate emergency shelters, hand out supplies, disseminate information, survey storm/disaster damage, and conduct neighbor well-checks. They also may be called upon for crowd control, basic first aid, or search and rescue.

The first class, Introduction to Disaster Preparedness, will be held Tue, Feb 4 from 7-9p at the Rockland Fire Training Center, 35 Firemen’s Memorial Dr, Pomona. Other upcoming classes will be Disaster Medical I on Tue, Feb 11 from 7-9p, and Disaster Medical II on Mon, Mar 2 from 7-9p. Register at rcsc@co.rockland.ny.us or by calling 845-364-2932.

Lane Closures Near Bridge This Week

Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) is scheduled to continue overhead gantry work on the bridge this week. The work will require overnight lane closures on northbound and southbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) traffic lanes in the area. Specific lane closure times are listed in the chart below.

Construction of the shared bicycle and pedestrian path continues. At the Rockland landing, construction continues along the side path, near the path’s underpass at South Broadway, and by the Exit 10 off-ramp from the northbound Thruway.
