The Villages: Flu Season and Holiday Transportation Schedules

This week in the villages: New York in general, but Rockland in particular, have been hard hit with flu cases this season.  It’s not to late to get vaccinated, and the Health Department will be giving vaccinations on Fridays from 11a to 12p with an appointment through Mar 27. There will be holiday closures and transportation schedule changes due to the Christmas holiday.

Christmas Holiday Bus, Train Schedules

Hudson Link will run its weekend schedule on Christmas Day, Wed Dec 25.

Tue Dec 24: Metro-North Hudson Line trains will operate expanded Saturday service.

Christmas Day Dec 25: Metro-North Hudson Line trains will operate hourly service

Metro-North will also operate a Special Christmas Week schedule through the week. For more info on tweaks to the Metro North train schedule, visit web.mta.info. For daily info on which trains meet up with H07 line Hudson Link buses from the Palisades Center to Tarrytown, visit HudsonLinkNyack.com.

Save The Date: Jan 4 for the 2020 Resolution Run

To celebrate the New Year, the Nyack river villages are ringing in 2020 with a resolution to end hunger in the community. On Sat, Jan 4th, the Nyack Hunger Coalition is asking everyone to join them for a 4 Mile fun run/walk to end the hunger crisis in Nyack. Rain, snow, or shine! Your donations will benefit The Nyack Hunger Coalition.

Holiday Closures

Village Hall offices and the Department of Public Works will be closed on Tue, Dec 24 and Wed, Dec 25. Trash and recycling remain on schedule for Mon and Thurs.

Holiday Shoppers Parking 

On Saturdays through December, parking will be free in the Municipal Lots on Artopee Way. Lots will be clearly identified as free parking. Parking on the streets will require payment through the MuniMeter or FlowBird App. Parking is always free on Sundays. Happy holiday shopping!

Holiday Closures

Village Hall will close at 12:30p on Tue, Dec 24 and be closed on Wed, Dec 25.

Town of Orangetown

Orangetown Secures Funding for New Playground Complex

Orangetown has secured funding to completely replace all playgrounds in the town with brand new equipment and rubberized surfacing. Included in this funding is a fully-inclusive and modern $500,000-plus replacement of the large Veterans Park playground complex that will allow children of all physical capabilities to play side-by-side with their friends.

Holiday Coat Drive

The Town of Orangetown will be sponsoring a Holiday Coat Drive along with the other four towns this year. The program runs now through December 23, and the towns will be competing against each other to collect the most coats. The town is collecting coats for both children and adults. Donations can be dropped off inside the bin located inside the entrance of Town Hall. At the end of the competition, all coats will be cleaned by local dry cleaners free of charge and donated to local charitable organization People-to-People for distribution. Help keep your neighbors warm this winter!

Town of Clarkstown

Special Events at Winter Wonderland

On Thurs, Dec 26 at 6p in the Congers Community Center Tommy Gardner from The Uncle Brothers will be performing fun, uplifting, award-winning sing and dance-along songs for kids of all ages. This free concert will be followed by fireworks over Congers Lake at 7p. On Sat, Dec 28 from 11a to 12p, come create a snowman door hanger for the holiday season in the Congers Community Center. Materials fee: $10. Winter Wonderland is open every evening from 5 to 9:45p through Jan 1.

Rockland County

Flu Vaccine

Influenza (flu) is now widespread in New York and Rockland is currently experiencing one of the highest rates of flu cases when compared to other counties in the state. The best way to prevent the flu, and its complications, is by getting the flu vaccine each year. It’s not too late! The Health Department will be giving the flu vaccine on Fridays, until Mar 27, from 11a to 12p, by appointment only. Call (845) 364-2534 for more information and to make an appointment.

The Health Department is offering the flu vaccine free of charge if you:

  • are 65 years and older (please bring identification with proof of age)
  • have Medicare or Medicaid (please bring your card)
  • or are uninsured or underinsured

There is a $20 fee for those six months old through 64 years old. Only cash or checks will be accepted. For those with private health insurance, the Health Department will provide you with a receipt to submit to your health insurance for possible reimbursement. For additional places to get your flu vaccine, visit www.flu.gov.
