The Villages: Nyack Library Gets A Grant

This week in the villages: Nyack Library has received a grant to expand its circulation area and add work space to support patron services. The Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center is holding a public sculpture competition to design and build an Edward Hopper-inspired bike rack. And South Nyack and the Town of Clarkstown continue their summer concert series’.

Summer Food Program

Reminder: Nyack’s Summer Food Program offers FREE breakfast and lunch to ANY child under 18 each weekday through August 30. There are two locations: Waldron Terrace and The Nyack Center. Nyack Library Gets NYS Construction Grant

The Nyack Library has received a grant of $7,600 to cover the costs of a construction project to expand its circulation area and add work space to support patron services. The grant, part of a $34 million capital fund appropriation in the 2018 state budget, was secured with the help of Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee and NYS Senator David Carlucci. “This important construction aid grant made it possible for the Nyack Library to renovate the work area for our busiest and most visited department enabling our wonderful staff to better serve our public,” said Angela Strong, Director, Nyack Library.

Hopper House Holds Bike Rack Competition

Nyack’s Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center is holding a public sculpture competition asking artists to submit proposals to design and build an Edward Hopper inspired bike rack. Artists interested in designing and fabricating a bike rack/sculpture must register by September 1 by sending a letter of interest and CV to info@hopperhouse.com. Interested parties will receive design specifications and contest rules and regulations. Artists will submit proposals that include the design of a sculpture that will serve as a bike rack and fabrication plans. The deadline for submissions is October 1; selection of winning submission will take place on November 1; the bike rack unveiling is planned for May 1, 2020.

Summer Concert Series

On Sun August 25 at 6:30p, the South Nyack Summer Concert Series in Franklin Street Park features Blarney Stew performing a stout broth of jigs, reels, and other traditional Celtic tunes, spiced by modern hits of the Pogues and Waterboys along with some classic rock and country covers. Franklin St between Cedar Hill Ave & Depot Pl, South Nyack.

Information on Local Support Organizations

Clarkstown has added information about local support organizations on town.clarkstown.ny.us under the Community tab on the homepage. Residents can now get information about various not-for-profits that deliver critical services for residents who find themselves in need. It’s also a good resource for residents to learn more about volunteer opportunities in the community.

Summer Concert Series

The Town of Clarkstown Summer Concert Series continues on Wed, August 21 at 7:30p at Germonds Park, 185 Germonds Rd, West Nyack with Beauty and the Grease, playing your favorites from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. Bring the family out for a fun night of music in the park. If it rains, the concert will be moved indoors to Felix Festa Middle School.

Lifeguards Needed

The Town of Clarkstown is looking to hire lifeguards for the remaining 2019 summer season. Must be at least 16 years old and have current lifeguarding and CPR/AED certifications. Great for anyone working summer camp who wants to get more hours. For more information, visit https://town.clarkstown.ny.us or call 639-6200. Pay rate: $12/hour or $14 with Water Safety Instruction (WSI).
