The Villages: Veterans Day 2018

This week in the villages: All village halls are closed Mon, Nov 12 in observance of Veterans Day. In Nyack, there will be no trash collection. The DPW will be picking up trash on Tue, Nov 13. All the trees that were planted as part of the Nyack Tree Project will be taken care of thanks to a grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. There’s still time to sign up for the Nyack Kids Wrestling Club and to play pickleball outdoors in Memorial Park.

Nyack Receives Tree Grant

The Village of Nyack will receive a $50,000 grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for an Urban and Community Forestry Project to provide professional services for tree pruning and stump removal throughout the village. The project also includes training sessions for DPW staff and community tree stewards in young tree training techniques, which will be important now that the Nyack Tree Project has planted nearly 100 young trees since April 2016.

Nyack Kids Wrestling Club

Registration is now open for the 10th annual Nyack Kids Wrestling Club for boys and girls in grades 2-6. The program runs November 26 through February 27 (except when school is closed) with practices held in the Wrestling Room of Nyack High School. Each participant receives a Nyack Kids Wrestling T-shirt and a USA Wrestling Membership Card (plus insurance and liability). The cost is $120 for Village of Nyack residents and $150 for non-residents. Please register before November 19. There is a mandatory parent and player orientation meeting on Mon, Nov 19 at 6p in the library at Nyack High School.

Pickleball Drop-in Play

Pickleball anyone? The Nyack Rec Dept invites pickleball players to Memorial Park each Wednesday at 9a for “drop-in” pickleball through November. The Rec Dept will supply nets and balls with a few spare paddles to lend if you are new to the sport. Meetup at 9a on the basketball courts at Nyack Memorial Park, Depew & Piermont Aves.

Rockland County

Foster Families Wanted

Each November, staff from the Rockland County Department of Social Services’ (DSS) Children’s Services Unit join with local Wendy’s franchisees to celebrate National Adoption Month to increase awareness of the need for foster families. Staff will be at Wendy’s in Nanuet and West Haverstraw to answer questions from residents interested in becoming foster/adoptive parents. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a foster parent, please stop by Wendy’s in Nanuet or West Haverstraw on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, from 5p to 8p. Local Election Results

The votes are in and Nyack Village Trustees Louise Parker and Donna Lightfoot-Cooper were re-elected to another two year term. Ellen Jaffee will continue to represent the district in the NYS Assembly and David Carlucci will continue to represent the district in the NYS Senate. Nita Lowey and Kirsten Gillibrand will continue to represent the district in the House and Senate, respectively. Govenor Mario Cuomo was re-elected to another four year term. Nyack College Leaving Rockland

Last week, Nyack College announced plans to move all undergraduate and graduate programs in South Nyack and Upper Nyack to its Lower Manhattan campus beginning next fall. Read more about the move in Nyack College Will Leave Rockland Next Fall.
