This week in the villages: It’s a new year with a new mayor and new town supervisor. Orangetown is looking for volunteers for its land-use and various other town boards. Roadway construction will be suspended again for the holiday weekend, making traveling a little easier. Mass transit takes a break today — no TZx service on New Year’s Day. Village of Nyack
There will be no trash pick-up on Monday, Jan 1. DPW will collect trash on Tuesday, Jan 2. Regular schedule resumes on Thursday, Jan 4.
The first “Downtown Meeting” of the year will be 9a on Tues morning in the 2nd floor courtroom at Nyack Village Hall. Mayor Don Hammond is continuing the tradition of former Mayor Jen Laird White to meet with business owners, residents and community leaders on the first Tuesday of every month to talk about local issues and initiatives.
Christmas Tree Disposal
Please leave Christmas trees at the curb with all ornaments and lighting removed. DPW will be picking up trees during the work week and the trees will be recycled for mulch. Please dispose of wreaths and roping with the regular trash.
Village of Upper Nyack
There will be no recycling pick-up on Monday, Jan 1.
The village is still collecting items to be donated to the People to People Food Pantry and the Hi Tor Animal Care Center Monday through Friday, from 9a -12n, until Jan 5. For a wishlist of items needed visit www.UpperNyack-NY.us
Town of Orangetown
Town Supervisor Chris Day is looking for volunteers to get join land use and advisory boards:
- The town continually seeks applicants for service on our land use boards: Planning, Zoning, Architecture & Community Appearance, and Historic Review. These boards are made up of involved citizens, appointed by the Town Board, and play a vital role in ensuring that our town remains a pleasant, beautiful, and safe place to live and work. While there are currently no vacancies, we welcome inquiries from interested residents and will keep your information on file in case a vacancy occurs.The minimum qualifications for land use board members: attendance at all or most meetings of your board, completion of an annual training run by the County Planning Federation, a sincere desire to serve your community and an aptitude for land use issues. You don’t have to be an engineer, lawyer or builder.
- Orangetown has many advisory boards and committees that meet throughout the year to make recommendations to the Town Board on various issues in town: environment, seniors, parks, property assessment, traffic advisory, and many others.Minimum qualifications for these boards and committees is attendance at all or most of the meetings and a sincere desire to serve your community.

Tappan Zee Bridge News
The New York State Thruway Authority and TZC will suspend roadway construction during peak holiday travel times to provide easier travel for residents and visitors as part of Governor Cuomo’s Drivers First program. All work behind temporary lane closures will cease from 6a Friday, Dec 29 until 6a Tuesday, Jan 2. Some construction work behind permanent barriers or for emergency repairs may be done.
