Nyack Weekender: Art, Music, Theatre and Water Treatment

View art openings, watch some local theatre, listen to live music, do the time warp (again), hike The Hook or tour a water treatment plant (truly, there’s something for everyone). Next week, two Nyack natives return home to perform at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar and The Hudson House. Also: see some spooky critters. Tis the season, you know.

Friday

  • Penguin Repertory Theatre presents Fall River where Lizzie Borden herself steps forward to tell the story of her life, before and after the famous murders known as “The Crime of the Century.” Fri at 2p & 8p, Sat at 4p & 8p, Sun at 2p, 7 Crickettown Road, Stony Point.
  • The Antrim Playhouse opens its 81st season with Nunsense, a lively nun-stop musical comedy that begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters. Fri and Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, 15 Spook Rock Rd, Suffern.

Saturday

  • Treat yourself to a tour on how your water is treated at Suez Tour Day. Visit the water treatment facilities and walk to the top of the Lake DeForest dam. Appropriate footwear required for walking outdoors (no open-toed or dress shoes). Event is rain or shine. 10a-2p, 55 Old Mill Rd, West Nyack.
  • View art on a unique medium at the Artists on Combat Paper Event and Exhibit. At 1:30p there will be an unveiling and dedication of two permanent art installations: Changes II by Walt Nygard and Traveling Wall of Hope by Scott Fine. 1-4p, Nyack Village Hall, 2nd floor, 9 N Broadway, Nyack.
  • Let’s do the time warp…again! A group of veteran and current The Rocky Horror Picture Show performers will be bring their old school style of the Rocky Horror floor show to the Tarrytown Music Hall. 11:30p, 13 Main St, Tarrytown.

Sunday

  • Halloween lore is filled with spooky owls, creepy spiders, black cats and vampire bats. Learn how these Animal Superstitions came to be. Discover which stories are true and which are fiction, and meet some of the animal characters in these stories. 10a, Hudson Highlands Nature Museum Wildlife Education Center, 25 Boulevard, Cornwall-on-Hudson.
  • Comedy legend, Robert Klein and other entertaining panelists will talk politics at One Year and Counting, a look at the world one year after the Presidential election. 2p, Rittenhausen Auditorium at BOCES, 131 N Midland Ave, Nyack.
  • Opening reception for Infinite Possibility, a collection of oil paintings, papier-mache sculptures, wall reliefs and graphic arts by Nikolay Kuk. There will be live musical performances by Ginny Carmen and Patrick Harris. 5-8p, Pomona Cultural Center, 584 Rt 306, Pomona.

Next Week

Nyack HS graduate Ethan Cohen is the front man for Hot Plate, a group of Oberlin improvisers who are dedicated to pushing themselves and pushing their music. On Wed Oct 18 they play Maureen’s Jazz Cellar. Tickets are $15. Doors open at 6p, show starts at 8p, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.

On Thursday, Hot Plate and fellow Nyack singer/songwriter Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez and her band perform at The Hudson House. Raina’s singular soulful sound brings jazz and R&B influences together with a depth and a fresh edge. Tickets are $10 or $5 with a student ID. The Hudson House show is 21+. Doors open at 7:30p, show starts at 8p, 134 Main St, Nyack.

Tuesday

Elmwood Playhouse is holding Auditions for On Clover Road. Tue & Wed at 7:30p, 10 Park St, Nyack.

Wednesday

Take an Armchair Walking Tour of Old Nyack Turnpike, one of Rockland’s most fabled roads. Follow the events, personalities, and sites to see along the way. 6:30p, Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway, Nyack. Also, Thurs at 2p, Valley Cottage Library, 110 Rt 303, Valley Cottage.
