The Villages: Labor Day 2017

This Week In The Villages: It’s your last day to wear white. And more importantly, it’s your only day to attend the Labor Day one-day-only pop-up park on the Hudson River in South Nyack. On Thursday there will be a Primary Candidates Forum in advance of the September 12 primary election. There are also a few do-good opportunities: You can help the victims of Hurricane Harvey or count bikes for the Town of Orangetown.

Village of Nyack

Primary Candidates Forum

On Thursday, September 7 at 7p, there will be a Primary Candidates Forum hosted by the Nyack NAACP at the Nyack Center (58 Depew Ave.).  The primary election will be held on Tues Sept 12.

Utility Pole Installation

O&R Liberty Street utility pole work this week.

Orange & Rockland’s utility pole installation project on Liberty Street and Hudson Ave.  runs through Sept 7. The project will include the installation of power lines on the new poles. Parking will be restricted in the area. No parking will be allowed on Liberty Street from Depew Avenue to Hudson Avenue. And parking will be restricted on a partial section of Hudson Avenue from Liberty Street to approximately the mid-way point adjacent to the Pavion site. If you have any questions concerning this project, contact Mr. Sandy Martinez at O&R Utilities (877-434-4100).

RFP To Design and Procure Splash Pad at Memorial Park

The Village of Nyack is requesting proposals to design and install one splash pad at Memorial Park. This RFP invites companies to submit proposals describing a complete assembly of a splash pad from planning to completion. They’re looking to have the splash pad installed by May 25, 2018. So next summer will be a joyously wet one. The Village will select one supplier to provide equipment and materials for the park as outlined in the RFP To Design and Procure Splash Pad at Memorial Park.

South Nyack

Labor Day Staycation Idea: If you want to cool your heels in the Hudson  on Labor Day, South Nyack is inviting you down to experience a new fun and funky Pop-Up Park (located at 115 Piermont Avenu, aka Towt Park) from 11a – 3p on Mon Sept 4.
Towt Park is one of two riverfront properties that the Village of South Nyack owns. It has not been developed or open to the public in decades. This is just the beginning of what the village hopes will be a revitalization of the space while bringing the community together in a fun and creative manner.

Help the Victims of Hurricane Harvey
At this time, the best way to help those in need is through monetary donations, as Texas relief cannot begin to accept supplies yet. Donations can be sent to United Way of Rockland County (35 Main Street, 2nd floor, Nyack, NY 10960). Write #HurricaneHarvey on the check.
Also, Hi Tor Animal Care Center, Inc. is accepting pets from the flood zone. Help animals in need by becoming a foster family. In addition to adopting a pet and giving cash, here are some of the things Hi Tor needs: blankets, towel, sheets, fans, bowls, leashes, pet beds, toys, cotton balls, rubber gloves, paper towels, bleach, garbage bags, rubbing alcohol, anti-bacterial soap, newspapers, dish soap, laundry detergent, sponges, brooms, mop heads, shovels, pooper scoopers and cleaning supplies.
In the coming weeks, the town will be planning to coordinate a collection drive to help those in need. More details will follow once they are finalized.

Town of Orangetown

Orangetown Bike Study

On Thurs Sept 7 at 7p , Orangetown will kick off the Orangetown Bike Study, with a meeting led by Parks & Trails NY (PTNY) at Orangetown Town Hall. Community members, cyclists, parents, land-use board members, and business owners are invited to attend. The study is intended to document bicycling usage, map routes, and help plan for tomorrow.
The Orangetown Bike Study needs community volunteers to help with manual bike counts during the week of September 10. If you are interested in helping out, you’ll need to attend a 45-minute training webinar planned on September 6 at 12:30p. (Email Vicki Caramante at if you would like to volunteer.)
Volunteers will choose a time and location to conduct manual counts on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, and on Saturday or Sunday. Trail locations will be counted from 5-7p on weekdays and from 12n-2p on weekends. Road intersections will be counted between 4-6p on weekdays and from 12n-2p on weekends.

Tappan Zee Bridge News

Landings Preparations
Following the shift of Rockland-bound traffic to the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) continues work near the Rockland and Westchester landings in preparation for the shift in Westchester-bound traffic to the structure, scheduled to occur later this fall. Traffic will then consist of four lanes in each direction, separated by a concrete barrier to allow for construction of the second span to be completed. All lanes on the new bridge are similar in width to the lanes on the old bridge.
In Rockland, upcoming landing operations include installation of an asymmetric median barrier with corresponding moment slabs, drainage, temporary asphalt preparation. In Westchester, concrete still needs to be paved. Drivers are reminded that the posted speed limit on the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge is 45 mph for the safety of motorists and construction workers.
Additional work includes:

  • Structural steel and stay cable installation on eastbound span
  • Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
  • Survey inspections on the existing bridge
  • Pier substructure work
  • Expansion joint operations
  • Internal tower work
  • Maintenance dock construction
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Construction of maintenance and state police facilities
