Gypsy Donut Back with New Name, Free Donuts

by Eric Brown
I’ve worked at Gypsy Donut since before its 2012 opening and I have loved every minute of it. After a few months of back and forth, Gypsy founding owner David Schloss and I came to an agreement for the purchase of the business. He felt it was his time to bow out but he wanted to keep the heart and soul of Gypsy alive. He didn’t want to sell it to a stranger and potentially lose what our community has come to love.
Part of the agreement was the name change. Gypsy’s logo is a silhouette of the Boxer dog breed. I wanted to pay a respectful homage to the roots that were planted for me to be able to take on the shop. Thus, the name Boxer Donut felt like a natural choice, albeit, a different connotation. I want the overall vibe to remain the same but add my own spin on it.
Ever since I started working in the coffee industry (nearly a decade now) my dream has been to have my own shop. David knew this and gave me every opportunity to learn the ropes at Gypsy. Starting as one of the first barista hires, getting a promotion to the front of house manager, and finally to the store manager. He’s given me freedom to experiment, and I’ve learned alongside him what works and what doesn’t. I couldn’t have asked for a better boss to help prepare me for this new role and I’m hoping to carry on the legacy with as much heart and aplomb as possible.
On Saturday 9/23, we’ll be holding a grand re-opening. We will give away one free mini donut to the first 150 guests. And there will be plenty of boxing-pun-themed donuts and drinks, including but not limited to: House made fruit punch called Knockout Punch and Blackberry Blueberry jam filled called the Black and Blue.
Gypsy was well known for having our customers Polaroids all over the shop. We want everyone to come find and take home their old one and snap a new one to hang up! (We’ll be making some cosmetic changes we’re really excited about!)
Oh yeah, we’re also permanently dropping donut prices across the board.

Boxer Donut is located at 18 North Franklin Street, in Nyack, NY.
