The Villages: Bridge Goin’ Up On a Friday

This Week In The Villages: It’s been a long time rumblin’. And now it is finally here for the driving. It, of course, is the new Tappan Zee Bridge–er, New NY Bridge–er, Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Call it what you will, but this week (Friday night) the bridge connecting Rockland and Tarrytown will open to westbound traffic. And that’s not all transpiring on the roads this week. The next phase of the Midland Avenue Road Project begins.

Village of Nyack

The village will begin the next phase of the Midland Avenue Road Project during the week of August 21. The road project will include the following work:

  • Installation of handicap corners at all intersections
  • Installation of new storm water catch basins from Haven Court south to High Avenue along the east curb line
  • Milling and re-paving on the entire length of the roadway from High Avenue to the Upper Nyack border

The village will have a park attendant to monitor the parking in Memorial Park on weekends to ensure safe entry and exit to the park for residents, visitors, and emergency response services.  Additional public parking is available in the parking lot by the Village Marina on Burd Street. For updates on any significant construction activity date changes and traffic advisories during the project, check the village website.

Rockland County

The County of Rockland will hold a blood drive on Wednesday, Aug 23 from 8a to 8p at the Rockland County Fire Training Center (35 Firemen’s Memorial Drive, in Pomona). Each donor will receive a voucher to exchange for two tickets to any Boulders game for the remainder of the season–including the play-offs.
Those who wish to donate can sign up online. Walk-ins are welcome. Donors should eat and drink before donating and they should bring their NYBC donor card or other form of ID. The blood drive is open to county employees and the general public.

Tappan Zee Bridge News

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is preparing the final driving surface of the new bridge in anticipation of the traffic shift scheduled for the overnight of Friday, Aug 25. The operation will shift four northbound/westbound traffic lanes of the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) to the first span of the new bridge.
TZC is scheduled to stripe the new bridge’s traffic lanes in the coming days. The work will take place on the westbound span and available areas at the landings.
Cashless Tolling Upgrades
Work on the overhead cashless tolling equipment in Rockland County will require an overnight ramp closure of the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) southbound/eastbound exit 10 (Nyack – South Nyack – US Route 9W) on-ramp beginning at 9p Monday, August 21 and concluding by 5a Tuesday, August 22.
Southbound/eastbound drivers will be detoured to the exit 11 (Nyack – South Nyack – US Route 9W) on-ramp, as shown above.
