This Week in The Villages: Outdoor summertime tunes continue to ring this week when a veritable rock ‘n roll juke box, George Romano, takes the stage in South Nyack and a jazz orchestra plays in Nyack’s Memorial Park. Bridge work will take place this week near the Rockland landing. And closer to home, there will be sewer scuttling–and not just by rats.
Village of Nyack
Exciting infrastructure work this week throughout the Village of Nyack–that is, if you’ve been itching to see sewer linings repaired. Yes, the village will work to make sure its sewer system is in order this week. It’s dirty but important business. Here’s where and when you should look out for hardhats popping out of sewers:
Wednesday – Gedney St b/w First Ave & Lydecker
Thursday – Gedney St b/w Lydecker & Main; Ackerman Pl (Upper Section)
Friday – Ackerman Pl (Lower Section); Main St b/w Gedney & River St
And on a more playful note, Pickleball Day in the village was a smash. As we reported, “the heat and humidity last Saturday (July 15) didn’t discourage about 80 people from trying their hand at the fastest growing sport in the US.” Pickleball is a game that combines the best parts of tennis, ping pong and badminton. It is played on a court half the size of a tennis court. Participants ranged from those aged 8 to those nine times that age.
This week Music On The Hudson, the weekly summer concert series each Tuesdays in Memorial Park, features the jazz influenced sounds of Cocomama, playing their own kind of World Latin Music.
Tappan Zee Bridge / New NY Bridge
Last week, TZC installed the first of eight overhead gantries (sign structures) on the east bridge. These gantries, or sign structures, inform motorists of accidents and convey directions.
This Tuesday and Wednesday (July 25-26), overnight paving work is scheduled to take place near the bridge’s Rockland landing. Good news though: The operation will not affect New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) traffic lanes.
Village of South Nyack
Nyack’s not the only village bumping groovin’ tunes this summer. The South Nyack Summer Concert Series in Franklin Street Park will feature George Romano this week. Romano plays standards and rock ‘n roll favorites spanning the past four decades along with some original music. Franklin St between Cedar Hill Ave & Depot Pl, South Nyack
Grants
Just short of $1.2 million in Community Development Block Grants award to Rockland Count groups were announced earlier this month by Rockland County Executive Ed Day. The Village of Nyack will receive $57,600 to refurbish sidewalks on First Avenue. The Nyack Center will also receive a $12,000 grant.
The Nyack Joint Fire District will receive $27,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. “It is essential that our first responders have the resources they need to react quickly and decisively to protect our communities,” said Congresswoman Nita Lowey. “This federal funding will ensure that Nyack Joint Fire District can effectively equip its firefighters and improve their ability to save lives. I will continue to advocate for more funding to protect our fire departments as they protect our communities.” The Nyack Joint Fire District will use this funding to acquire personal protective equipment for its firefighters.
