Nyack Weekender: Rockabilly, R&B, Folk, Jazz, & Opera, Too

This weekend features Rockabilly, Rhythm & Blues, American Roots and Folk — and that’s just at the  Rockland-Bergen Music Festival. There’s also jazz, classical piano, opera and a concert band. Train Station Sundays are back at the Piermont Train Station and you can take a walking tour with the Historical Society of the Nyacks.

Friday

  • For a unique outdoor movie experience head to Garner Art Center for Outdoor Shorts, a series of curated short films projected on screens and unique surfaces at four outdoor locations throughout the historic mill complex. Fri and Sat at 7:30p, 55 W Railroad Ave, Garnerville.
  • Can’t get to the city? Birdland comes to Nyack as Bill O’Connell and the Latin Jazz All-Stars featuring Steve Slagle, Conrad Herwig, Luques Curtis, Richie Barsha and Roman Diaz perform at the Nyack Center. 8p, 58 Depew Ave, Nyack.

Saturday

  • This week Bike Nyack takes a spin to Englewood, NJ going south on Route 9W and returning north via Route 505. 8:30a, meetup at Nyack Memorial Park, corner of Depew & Piermont Aves.

  • The Hudson Lyric Opera presents The Elixir of Love, a comic opera in two acts, featuring elements of love, and a magic potion. This production will be spoken and sung in English. Sat at 7:30p, Sun at 2p, Trinity United Methodist Church, 47 E Main St, Stony Point.
  • Move and groove to classics from all decades with Drive at Casa del Sol. 9:30p, 104 Main St, Nyack.

Sunday

  • The Rockland Bergen Music Festival wraps up its three day show featuring “song writers by the river,” tribute bands and other local acts. 11a-8p at the German Masonic Park in Tappan.
  • Train Station Sundays are back at the newly restored Piermont Train Station. Tour the museum for free and learn a bit of Piermont history. 12-3p, 50 Ash St, Piermont.
  • Take a Walking Tour of Upper Nyack with the Historical Society of the Nyacks. This tour highlights remarkably detailed Victorian mansions, a fire company, and sites of early ship building and commerce. 2p, NW corner of N Broadway and 6th Ave, Nyack.
  • Local pianist, Julia Furlan, will play Classical Piano at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar. 3p, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.
  • The Rockland County Concert Band, a symphonic band made up of musicians from the Rockland area, performs at the Green Meadow Waldorf School. 3p, 307 Hungry Hollow Rd, Chestnut Ridge.
  • It’s a jazz thing as Soul of Paradise, a great band with a soulful sound, perform at the Hudson House. 7p, 134 Main St, Nyack.

Tuesday

Bring a blanket and a friend to the Music on the Hudson summer concert kick-off as No Discipline treat us to some reggae beats. The opening act will be the Danielle Sheri Band. 7:30p, Memorial Park, Piermont & Depew Aves, Nyack

Wednesday

Rivertown Film screens The Salesman at the Nyack Center. Emad and Rana need to evacuate their decrepit apartment in Tehran and both are actors in a production of Death of a Salesman, which affords them a certain status. When they move into a new apartment, they discover a mystery. Soon a former tenants’ life invades their household in shocking ways, revealing tensions and breaks within their marriage. 8p, 58 Depew Ave, Nyack.

Thursday

Clarkstown holds its annual Independence Day Fireworks display at Nanuet High School. Festivities begin at 5p with a concert scheduled for 8p. 103 Church St, Nanuet.
