This Week in The Villages: Government officials want to hear what you have to say about being on the river and when you should be allowed to cross it without a car. TZx service is coming to Sundays beginning this summer. And what to do if you meet a coyote.
Village of Nyack
There’s much to do about what to do with Nyack’s waterfront. The Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) committee wants to hear what the community has to say. Last week they held a public workshop. This week you can chime in by taking the LWRP five minute survey.
A draft of Section III of the LWRP should be online at Nyack-NY.gov, however Nyack’s web site has been offline for the past couple of days. A recent village Facebook post about the problem didn’t promise a “when” for a fix. Visitors to Nyack-NY.gov are greeted with a hosting service message that says “…you do not have permission to view the requested file or resource.” On the Village of Nyack Facebook page, there’s an explanation of sorts: “[The site] was shut down by the hosting company due to too much activity (a victim of success).” Given that the only thing everyone agrees on is that the site is dense, confusing and mostly un-navigable, it’s unlikely that too much usage is the problem. So, stay tuned.
What’s the answer to the #1 Question Everyone Will Be Asking This Week? The Village of Nyack’s July 4th 2017 fireworks will take place at 9p on Tuesday, 7/4.
Town of Orangetown
Coyotes have been sighted in Orangetown over the last several weeks. Here’s what the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation says you should do if you run into Wile E. Coyote or any of his mates:
- Walk Tall: Be aggressive in your behavior–stand tall and hold arms out to look large.
- Make Noise: If a coyote lingers for too long, then make loud noises, wave your arms, throw sticks and stones.
There’s more information from the DEC online at Coyote Conflicts, Issues Guidance to Avoid Conflicts with Coyotes and Tips to Eliminate Wildlife Conflicts Prevent and Control Wildlife Issues on Your Property.
Contact the Orangetown Police Department at (845) 359-3700 and ask for Animal Control in the event of a coyote emergency. A police officer or an Animal Control Officer will be dispatched.
Tappan Zee Bridge / New NY Bridge
The mayor of South Nyack went on a press tour last week telling several media outlets that the hours the new Bike/Pedestrian Shared Use Path (SUP) across the Tappan Zee Bridge should be limited because “there’s no commercial places for anybody to go.” Which will probably come as somewhat of a surprise to the store owners in downtown Nyack and Piermont.
Limiting the hours from dawn to dusk sounds reasonable — until you remember that sun goes down before most people get home from work five months of the year, severely limiting the value of the SUP as either a commuting or recreational option. Three’s an implication that security will be a problem, but that shouldn’t be the case, because the one block that the SUP passes through the Village of South Nyack is adjacent to the village’s police station.
The New NY Bridge people want to know what do you think. Take their online five minute survey and look for the question that says “When would you like for the SUP to be open for use each day?”
Meanwhile, bridge construction continues. With the completion of the westbound towers, the two red tower cranes, which have serviced the construction of the westbound main span, are being removed. Acrylite noise barriers are being installed on the westbound Rockland approach to deflect sound waves and provide a perceivable noise reduction.
Well, Bus My Bridges — on Sundays
County Executive Ed Day says the M-Sat Tappan Zee Express bus service will add service on Sundays beginning this summer. “We are pleased to offer Rockland residents another transportation option,” said Day. “The lack of weekend service has been a hardship for many.”
Saturday service will also be expanded. The new service is scheduled to start August 5.
The MTA is picking up the almost $600,000 price tag for the new bus trips in response to complaints that Rockland businesses pay a commuter tax but don’t benefit from direct train service to New York City.
When the new schedules are published, this info will be added to tzxBus.com, the Nyack News And Views website that shows you the next bus/train leaving Rockland / returning from NYC.
