The Villages: School Board Vote, New Gazebo, NIH Project

This Week in The Villages: Forget what happened on Nov 8 — Tuesday’s vote is the one that really counts if you happen to be a parent or a property owner (about half of a typical property tax bill goes to support local schools). Don Hammond reports that Memorial Park will have a new gazebo in time for July 4th. And Congresswoman Nita Lowey paid a visit to the HRH Care Community Health Center in Nyack to discuss an NIH research project.

Nyack Village Board May 11 Meeting

by Don Hammond

  • There will be a new gazebo in Memorial Park by the end of June.
  • The Lower Hudson Transit Link (the replacement for the Tappan Zee Express) will include new traffic signals that can be controlled by the bus and pedestrian crossing signals on Main and Midland, Main and Franklin and Franklin and Depew. Nyack will see four new or upgraded bus shelters on both sides of Route 59, near the Super 8 Motel, on Broadway and an upgraded shelter on Artopee.
  • Orange and Rockland work to replace gas lines on Spear St, Hudson Ave and sections of Piermont Ave will take place this spring and summer. Cost sharing with O&R will allow the village to increase the amount of paving in the late summer early fall.

  • The village board is considering televising meetings.

Nyack School Board Election

Polls are open from 7a-9p on Tues May 16 for the Nyack School Board Trustee election and budget vote. Each of the five candidates running for the three board seats submitted candidate statements to Nyack News And Views which have been published over the past week.

  • Beth Davidson – I’m running for Nyack School Board because I have the experience and the energy to make our public schools even better, stronger, and more inclusive. As an education and nonprofit marketing consultant, I’ve spent time in dozens of independent schools and colleges. As your school board trustee I would push to keep the focus on teaching, not testing. As trustee I’ll also advocate for responsible budgets. And in the end, I’ll do what I think is best for all our kids. READ MORE
  • Leeann Irvin, Nyack Schools, Board of EducationLeeann Irvin Despite all of these improvements and new programs, there are still issues that face our district The first of these is the financial strain our district faces each and every year. The first of these is the financial strain our District faces each and every year. Second, Nyack needs to keep moving forward with upgrades to our curriculum to create the critical thinkers needed in the job force today. Third, the profile of our Nyack Public Schools student population is changing. Our district is experiencing an influx of ELL (English Language Learners) and SIFE (Students with Interrupted Formal Education) students who need support to maximize their educational opportunities. • Michael Lockett  – My candidacy is about five key goals: I want to make sure each student regardless of race, economics or disability has an inclusive nurturing environment that fosters their success both academically and in life. I want a district that upholds high educational standards for students and gives all students the means to achieve them. I want to make the relationship between the district and the community stronger and more vibrant. I want a more transparent system that allows both parents and non-parent tax payers a means to gain information about the schools and budget. Finally, I want to increase and/or strengthen programs and services designed to help families and students in need. READ MORE
  • Jennifer Marraccino  I believe that public education is about the development of each child to the fullest extent of their abilities. It’s a commitment to high standards and high expectations for ALL students. It should and can be the promise of equal opportunities to all children no matter race, religion or ability. Being a school board member is about working towards these lofty goals for your own community and beyond. That includes being accessible and listening to community views here in Nyack and Valley Cottage.  READ MORE
  • James MarshallI am seeking a third term to take what I have learned over the past six years and continue to advocate for all students. We all know our young people are being confronted with new challenges–cyber-bullying, suicide ideation, pressure of class rank, under-age drinking, opiate addiction, etc. If re-elected, I will continue to work with our BOE to keep us focused on our district mission to equip ALL students academically and socially with competencies consistent with 21st century education: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication, cultural/global awareness, compassion/empathy and content mastery. I will particularly focus on social justice programs that address the many social pressures confronting our youth to make our district even better. READ MORE

Congresswoman Nita Lowey Visits HRHCare Community Health Center in Nyack

Nita Lowey Visits HRHCare Community Health Center in Nyack

HRHCare Founder and Executive Vice President Rev. Jeannette Phillips, Congresswoman Nita Lowey, and HRHCare President and CEO Anne Kauffman Nolon.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey came to the HRHCare Community Health Center in Nyack to discuss the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) upcoming All of Us research project and the importance of health care access for all. Nyack Mayor Jen Laird White and HRHCare President and CEO Anne Kauffman Nolon joined Rockland County’s congresswoman at the event.
The All of Us Research Program will gather data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate research and improve health. By taking into account individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and biology, researchers will uncover paths toward delivering precision medicine.
“Investments in cutting-edge medical research will improve health outcomes, ease suffering, and provide more Americans with longer, healthier, and more productive lives,” said Lowey.
“We are so honored that the National Institutes of Health chose HRHCare as one of just six Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) nationwide to participate in the All of Us research project, said Nolon. “The leadership of Nita Lowey helped Congress turn around their budget with a $2 billion increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health.”
