This Week in The Villages: You may have to wait two and four years to cast your vote for significant political change at the national level, but locally there is a very important election coming up: the Nyack School Board. Throughout the week we’ll be hearing from candidates. Protect your health by attending a cancer screening or yoga class at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. Protect your sanity by signing up for your town’s Do Not Knock list.

Nyack School Board Election Candidates Forum

by Don Hammond
On Tuesday, May 9 at 7p, the five candidates for the Nyack School Board will appear at the PTSA Meet The Candidates Forum. The Forum will be held at Nyack High School. We should all have learned by now how important elections are; this is your chance to familiarize yourself with the candidates before casting your vote on May 16th. You can read about the five candidates here, as well as on Nyack News and Views throughout the week–beginning with a letter written by Nyack School Board candidate, Beth Davidson.

Montefiore Nyack Hospital

One of the nice things about having a community hospital in our village is the number of free health clinics and programs that are offered. Next week, on Friday, May 19th, Montefiore is conducting a cancer screening at The Breast Center.
Montefiore also offers weekly yoga classes taught by a certified yoga instructor on Wednesday evenings from 6-7p for cancer patients and survivors; and on Thursday evenings from 6-7p for MS patients. In addition, Montefiore Nyack holds free weight loss seminars and health fairs throughout the year. Visit their Facebook page to find out when these and other health related seminars are available.

Do Not Knock Registry

Both the Town of Orangetown and the Town of Clarkstown have their versions of the Do Not Knock Registry which is a list of residences and businesses at which door-to-door commercial solicitation–an offer to sell or buy goods or property–is prohibited. In Orangetown, the best way to sign up is to visit the Town Clerk’s office and put your name on the list, at which time you will receive a decal for your door. If you are unable to make it in person, you can either email the Town Clerk (at townclerk@orangetown.com) or call the Town Clerk at 845-359-5100. For more information on the Town of Orangetown’s Do Not Knock Registry, visit www.orangetown.com/do-not-knock-registry/. (Please note, local charitable groups and political candidates and other non-commercial entities are not impacted by this law.)
The Town of Clarkstown has a No Knock Registry which you can either sign up for at Town Hall or with an online form at town.clarkstown.ny.us. Your address will be placed upon a list to be kept by the Town Attorney. You will also receive a sticker to place by your door. Distribution of leaflets, pamphlets or other literature, such as commercial, political or religious material is not affected,
