Nyack Weekender: President’s Day Weekend

There’s music in the air and art on display near Nyack on President’s Day weekend. The Tarrytown Music Hall commemorates Beatlemania; RoCA opens two new art exhibits.  And if you want to change the world, there’s a session how to lobby legislators and a non-violent Blueprint For Revolution talk.

Friday

  • Skate at Bear Mountain Ice Rink. Adults $5, children (ages 4-11) $4. 2-3:30p. General skating: Fri from 8-9:30p, Sat & Sun from 10a-9:30p. Bear Mountain Ice Rink, Bear Mountain State Park, Palisades Interstate Parkway.

Saturday

  • The Nyack Community Chorus performs at Grace Episcopal Church. 5p, 130 1st Ave, Nyack.

Sunday

  • Kyle P. Walker performs “Blacknotes,” a panoramic program aimed at closing the gap between traditional American art music and music influenced by African American culture. The performance features excerpts from Samuel Coleridge,  Frederick Rzewski, and George Gershwin. 1:30 – 3:30p, Valley Cottage Library, 10 Route 303.
  • The Carson McCullers Center presents After Carson’s “A Tree. A Rock. A Cloud.”  The event features original music composed and performed by Liliya Ugay (piano), accompanied by Paul Neubauer (viola).  After the musical performance there will be a dramatic reading of the short story, adapted and performed by poet/playwright John O’Keefe. Reception at the Carson McCullers FCNL Advocacy TrainingHouse. 3p at 131 S. Broadway, South Nyack.
  • Learn how to effectively lobby your congressional representatives in a workshop led by Maiya Zwerling, the national field organizer for the Friends Committee on National Legislation. 3-6p, Stony Point Training Center, 17 Cricketown Rd.

Tuesday

  • Make friends with fellow readers at the Book and Pub Club for 20 & 30-somethings. This month’s book is Nobody’s Fool by Richard Russo. 7p,  Prohibition River, 82 Main St.
  • The Shakespeare Discussion Group will meet at the Nyack Library from 4-5:30p. This informal group reads aloud and discusses all things Shakespeare for anyone who’s just curious, seriously addicted, or wants to brush up their knowledge.

Local author and photojournalist Bryan Shih discusses his recent book, The Black Panthers:  Portraits from an Unfinished Revolution. Shih and historian Yohuru Williams offer a reappraisal of the party’s history and legacy through stunning portraits and interviews with surviving members. 7-8:30p, Nyack Library.

  • A discussion of Thomas Wolfe’s Look Image result for Joseph CornellHomeward Angel, the 1929 story about a young man’s burning desire to leave his small town and tumultuous family in search of a better life. 7-8p, Valley Cottage Library, 10 Route 303.
  • Art historian Cliff Tisdell presents a visual lecture on Nyack native  Joseph Cornell, one of the most original American artists of the twentieth century. 7-8:30p, Valley Cottage Library, 10 Route 303.
  • BLUEPRINT FOR REVOLUTION is an illustrated guide to changing the world, or just your community, through non-violent means. The event, held at the Palisades Free Library, is a special opportunity for peaceful protestors, activists, and community organizers to join Serbian author and global activist Srdja Popovic in a discussion about non-violent resistance. 7-9p, 19 Closter Rd.
  • Underground - A Play by Samuel Harps (February 24, 25) The Underground, a play by local playwright Samuel Harps, follows two families on the underground railroad traveling through parts of Rockland County in the 1850’s. 8-10p. Shades Repertory Theatre, 64 New Main St, Haverstraw.
