Nyack Center Tonight: Community Talks, Police Listen

Orangetown Police Chief Kevin Nulty speaks at Nyack Center on 5/17/2008

Orangetown Police Chief Kevin Nulty speaks at Nyack Center on 5/17/2008

Nyack, Feb 1 — No matter where your allegiances lie, it’s undeniably been a rocky past few years for Americans’ — and especially minorities’ — relations to the police. Freddie Gray. Michael Brown. Eric Garner. The list of unarmed black men killed by the police goes on. In part because of the ability with social media to instantaneously broadcast violent mistreatment to the world, America has become more conscious of — and enraged at — police violence against black men.
Tonight at 6:30p, the Orangetown Police Department take a big step in their effort to improve trust with the local community. The public is invited to the Nyack Center to talk. The police will be there to just listen. The subject: how the police department can improve trust in the community in which they serve.
This meeting is a follow up to a similar session from December. The series is sponsored by the Nyack Center, the Village of Nyack, VCS (the organization that brings the Undoing Racism Workshop to Rockland each year) and the Orangetown Police.
A third meeting is planned where police will share what they have learned from the December and February sessions.

Nyack People & Places, a weekly series that features photos and profiles of citizens and scenes near Nyack, NY, is sponsored by Sun River Health.
