Nyack Window Project: Whirligig

by Ashley Tedino
The Nyack Window Project, a streetscape exhibition that pairs visual artists with local landlords to create original installations in downtown storefronts,  features 16 locations featuring the work of 15 artists in  Nyack.
Conceived by award-winning set designer and village resident Joanne Howard, the Nyack Window project is in its second year. This week Nyack News And Views will feature the work of several of this year’s artists.

“Whirligig” by Robyn Donohue-Martignoni

Martignoni’s window piece was inspired by the holiday season which brings vibrant color and festive texture into the display. As you view the window, you will see wool pom poms strung with an assortment of glass beads and sequins pinned onto the hot pink walls. Martignoni also refers to her window piece as “Pom Pom String Land.”

Martignoni is currently an Arts Administrator and a Curator of Photography and Contemporary Art. Ever since Martignoni was young, she has been working with fiber and fabric. She is a graduate of the University of Sydney and has worked as the Assistant Curator of Photography at Sydney, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Magnum Photos in London, and Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, New York. Currently, Martignoni lives in Nyack.
“Whirligig” is on display through the end of January in the windows of the Athene building at the corner of Main Street and Broadway in Nyack. Martignoni’s entry in the 2016 Nyack Window project was sponsored by NYS Senator David Carlucci.

The project was coordinated by the Village of Nyack Recreation department. Nyack News And Views is a participating sponsor, along with The Time Nyack hotel, Christopher Street Financial, Rand Commercial Realty, Weld Realty, Nyack Hospital, Senator David Carlucci, Nancy Blaker Weber, Kim-Adele Rosner, Jennifer Laird White, Don Hammond and Thom Kleiner, Amos Friedland and Phoebe Ryder, Denise and Adam Lipson, Jennifer Smith, Edward Hopper House and Maura’s Kitchen.
