Nyack Weekender: T-minus 6 Days to T-Day

Time to get your gobble on. This weekend you can Dance to the Movies and get some gifts at the Made by Hand and Craft Fair. There’s Much Ado About Nothing at Elmwood and Small Matters of Great Importance at the Hopper House. Need to get out of town?  You can always Hop On The Bus (Gus) to hear Haverstraw’s historic pipe organs. This list of pre-Thanksgiving things to do and where to them is brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland.


  • Rivertown Film invites you to Dance to the Movies, a benefit extravaganza. Featuring a live DJ and dance clips from films like Saturday Night Fever, Fame, Grease, and Dirty Dancing, learn a step or two from a dance demo and group lesson presented by Fred Astaire Dance Studios.   • Children’s Shakespeare Theatre puts a 70’s era disco spin on the classic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. Fri at 7p at Palisades Presbyterian Church, 117 Washington Spring Rd, Palisades. 
  • Take part in Kirtan with Sharada Devi, an evening of call and response Sanskrit chanting. 8p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union Ave, Sparkill.
  • Elmwood Community Playhouse stages the timely comedy-drama, An American Daughter. The play centers on Dr. Hughes, the perfect Presidential nominee for U.S. Surgeon General, who must face the cost of one woman who dares to have it all. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p at Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.


  • The Historical Society of Rockland County hosts a bus tour to several of Haverstraw’s most historic and well-known pipe organs, as their organists present classical, sacred and popular selections. Tickets here. 8:45a – 2:45p, meet at Haverstraw Village Parking Lot, 40 New Main Street.
  • Stop by the Made by Hand Art and Craft Fair, where shoppers will find the finest local crafts, including handcrafted jewelry, knitwear, fibercrafts, pottery, fine art, and other curiosities. More than 40 artisans will be in attendance, featuring handcrafted items for everyone – adults, children, and even pets! 10a – 4p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
  • Continue the holiday shopping at the Fine Antiques & Collectibles Sale, featuring folk Art, early American, modern, Asian antiques, arts and crafts. Sat & Sun from 9a – 3p at Palisades Community Center, 675 Oak Tree Rd, Palisades.
  • klassic-rock-01Milk and Cookies Playhouse presents Klassic Rock for Kids featuring Alice Leon, a vocalist extraordinaire and multi-instrumentalist. Following the concert, stay for an Interactive Hour with face painting – like Kiss, Twisted Sister, etc, album art coloring station, geology station (rocks, get it?) and a photo booth. Milk and Cookies after the show! Tickets at $15 (children under 18 months are free). 11a at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Small Matters of Great Importance: Paper + Art is a juried exhibition celebrating small works that make big statements. The exhibit runs through Jan 3. Reception is from 5-7p at Edward Hopper House, 82 N Broadway, Nyack. 
  • The Historical Society of Nyack hosts Van Houten’s Landing Historic Neighborhood exhibit. Weekly on Sat from 1-4p at 50 Piermont Ave, Nyack.


  • Enjoy a creative Thanksgiving Dinner served family style at a communal table, with local craft beer & wine. Table games and 15025354_599706356899026_3893095347080833083_olive music, too! 4p at at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Enjoy some afternoon jazz with the Don Falzone Quinete at 5p at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.
  • Hike the Doris Duke Trail: Trek a 3.5 mile moderate loop and see interesting cliffs, a scenic marsh and a panoramic views from the top. 1p at the Sterling Forest Visitor Center, 116 Old Forge Rd, Tuxedo.

Take part in the Interfaith Thanksgiving Program sponsored by I CAN (Interfaith Clergy Association). Children of several churches in Nyack and The Reform Temple of Rockland (RTR) get together at 6p for dinner and activities including preparing packages of food for the community.  At 7:30p, an interfaith service will take place.
