Nyack Weekender: Autumn Arrival

Fall in! Fall has arrived with lots of reasons to spend time outdoors. Try National Hunting & Fishing Day, Rodeo & Western Day, Torne Valley Vineyard Grape Crush and Oktoberfest. There’s also art, theatre and the annual Garner Arts Block Party. Our weekly Fri-Sun rundown of what to do and where and where to do it is brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland.

Friday

  • The Peter Furlan Quintet performs standards and originals at Nyack’s newest jazz venue. 9 & 11p at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, 2 N Broadway.
  • penguinPenguin Rep Theatre stages Daniel’s Husband, a play about an ideal couple, albeit Mitchell does not believe in marriage and Daniel does. Fri at 2 & 8p, Sat at 4 & 8p, Sun at 2p. at Penguin Rep Theatre, 7 Cricketown Rd, Stony Point.
  • Check out the fast-paced play, Boeing Boeing. A swinging ‘60s bachelor, Bernard is happily engaged to three gorgeous stewardesses but he runs into turbulence when all three of his fiancées arrive in town simultaneously. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p. Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
  • Check out Sculpture in the Garden, featuring the work of James Tyler and Santi-Hitorangi. Exhibit on display Wed – Sun, 12 -5p, through Oct 23. Edward Hopper House, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

Saturday

  • Bike Nyack‘s weekad_BikeNyack255x219ly 25 mile ride goes over a hill and across a dale to Hillsdale, NJ. Meetup at 830a at Nyack Memorial Park, the corner of Depew & Piermont Aves. This event is part of the Hudson River Valley Ramble, an annual September series that celebrates the history, culture and natural resources of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.
  • Enjoy the outdoors at National Hunting & Fishing Day. Bring the family for fishing and archery demonstrations, wilderness survival, a make-your-own fishing pole activity and outdoor foraging. 9a – 3p at rodeo_short-version_ventureCongers Lake Memorial Park, 6 Gilchrest Rd.
  • The Rodeo & Western Day brings the wild west to Rockland with bull riding, bronco riding, barrel racing, clowns, pony rides, a wild west show and a flag parade. Sat & Sun at 10:30a German Masonic Park, 120 Western Hwy, Tappan.
  • Suffern Day features performances by local artists, emergency vehicles, including a helicopter landing at the fields. Local restaurants offer free samples. Music and fireworks start at 6:30p. Suffern Athletic Fields, 87 Chestnut St, Suffern.
  • Everyone’s invited to Bear Mountain for the 2016 Oktoberfest where families can partake in German food and beer, entertainment and craft vendors. Occurs every weekend through Oct. 12-6p, Anthony Wayne Recreation Area, Palisades Interstate Parkway, Bear Mountain.
  • garnerGarner Arts Brick Alley Block Party is an evening of art, music, food and drink to celebrate the Fall Exhibition of Transposing Perception on display in The Dye Works through Dec 10. 6:30p at Garner Arts Center, 55 W Railroad Ave, Garnerville.
  • The Historical Society of Nyack hosts Van Houten’s Landing Historic Neighborhood exhibit. Weekly on Sat from 1-4p at 50 Piermont Ave, Nyack.

Sunday

  • Show your park some love at Nyack Memorial Park Cleanup. Join the Berea Seventh-day Adventist Environmental Awareness Cleanup as they cleanup debris and litter. 9a – 12p at Memorial Park, in front of the screen-shot-2016-09-21-at-10-21-17-amplayground.
  • Set Sail on the Hudson at the Nyack Boat Club open house. Tour the club and enjoy an hour-long sail. Space is limited, so email admission@nyackboatclub.org to reserve your spot. 10:30 – 11:30a at Nyack Boat Club, 59 Gedney St.
  • Chris Conte, a vocalist and upright bassist, performs classic, swinging American Songbook jazz & blues favorites at Sunday brunch. 11:30a-3p at Sixty-5 on Main, 65 Main St, Nyack.
  • Historic Nyack Walking Tour: Trace Nyack’s growth from a small river village to a major commercial and manufacturing center. Meet at the foot of Main Street by the river in Nyack at 2p.
  • You can sip the wine, taste the cheese and listen to the chickens. But mostly take in the art at the last Art Students League of New York’s Open Studio session at Vyt. See exhibits by the artists-in-residence from 2-5p at 241 Kings Highway in Orangeburg.
  • Take a guided walk to the Vanished Hamlet of Johnsontown where three abandoned cemeteries as well as the homes, school and church were located. Bring lunch/water. 10a – 1p at Harriman State Park, Palisades Interstate Parkway, Lake Sebago Beach.
  • AutumnRoll up your pants for the Torne Valley Grape Crush. Enjoy a barbecue, wine, NYS craft beer and spirits, live music and handcrafted gifts. $5 admission. 11a – 6p at Torne valley Vineyards, Torne Valley Rd, Hillburn.
  • Check out the opening reception for Mythica. The exhibit features the scultpures of Grace Knowlton and the encaustic photography of Lisa Levart. The reception includes a transportive musical experience with singer Naaz Hosseini and musician Peter Blum. 5 – 8p at Pomona Cultural Center, 76 Rt 306, Pomona.
