Nyack Weekender: April Fools’ Fun

What kind of fool would miss the fun this weekend? Nyack Art Collective’s First Friday event celebrates Ecology with art & music. Garner Arts Center screens The Metropolis Organism and the Jewish Film Festival continues with East Jerusalem West Jerusalem. Union Arts Center comes alive with music during Soundbath and a concert featuring Martha Mooke on electro-violin. And don’t miss a throwback Hip-Hop Party to benefit Nyack’s Skateboard Scholarship Program. Here’s your Fri-Sun list of what to do and where to do it, brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland and the Union Arts Center.

Friday

  • It’s the First Friday of April and Nyack’s monthly one-night downtown arts festival includes a group show at Prohibition River at 7p, 82 Main St. Head to Casa del Sol at 8p, 104 Main St, to see a themed exhibit titled Ecology and to hear singer-songwriter Danielle Sheri perform soulful original and cover songs. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective at various venues throughout downtown from 6-8p.
  • Habitat for Humanity in Rockland holds a fundraiser Friday your neighbors in need. $40 tickets include unlimited dinner buffet, soft drinks & 2 free beverages. From 6-9p at the Nyack Pour House Restaurant, 102 Main St.
  • Metropolis-Organism-Image-670x670A Time To Kill is a suspenseful courtroom drama infused with crisp humor while dealing with themes of racism, sexual violence and the legal system. Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack. Showtimes are Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p.
  • The Man Who Came To Dinner is a 1930’s comedy about an injured radio personality whose abrasive ways terrorize the well-to-do family that is caring for him. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, Antrim Playhouse, 15 Spook Rock Rd, Suffern.

Saturday

  • Join Peter Blum and Naaz Hosseini for Playing with Sound, Healing with Sound. Learn basic practices voice energetics, vowel sounds, tuning forks, singing bowls, and drum and rattle for shamanic journeying. 1p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Screening of The Metropolis Organism and discussion with local filmmaker, Frank Vitale. 7:30-9:30p at Garner Arts Center, 55 W Railroad Ave, W Haverstraw.
  • Attend Soundbath: A Horizontal Concert and experience a transportive musical experience where you can close your eyes and drift into your own imagery and contemplation. Tickets available here. 8p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Tear up the dance floor with DJ Stretch the Kid Chaos at a Hip-Hop Party to benefit reminisceNyack’s Skateboard Scholarship program. $10 to enter, 21 years and up. 9p – 12a at Prohibition River, 82 Main St.
  • Cousin Earth performs “human music” and Teddy Midnight perform electro dance funk at 10p at Olive’s, 118 Main St, Nyack.
  • Learn about the Hudson Valley’s Dutch origins dating back to the 1600’s at the  Dutchtown and Major Andre: Highlights of Haverstraw History exhibit, presented by the Historical Society of Rockland and the Town of Haverstraw. Exhibit runs Wed–Fri and Sun from 12-4p until May 15. Exhibit reception: 12-4p at HSRC History Center, 20 Zukor Rd, New City.
  • Where We Are Standing: Contemporary Women Artists from Iran. Three artists who grew up in Iran before moving to North America share a strong cultural identity and a common focus on issues of gender and displacement shaped by the complex political and social landscape of their homeland. Featuring the work of Golnar Adili, Roya Farassat, and Shabnam K. Ghazi. Exhibit runs through April 24.  Wed-Sun 12-6p at the Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

Sunday

  • The Jewish Film Festival screens East Jerusalem West Jerusalem. Known as the Israeli “Springsteen,” David Broza travels to East Jerusalem with award-winning American, Palestinians and Israeli musicians to record his latest album in an eight-day marathon session. 7-9p at Lafayette Theater, 97 Lafayette Ave, Suffern.
  • The Rockland Music Makers perform Gershwin, Porter and More! Composed of male and female seniors who volunteer their time to share the joy of music. 1:30p at Valley Cottage Library, 110 NY-303.martha-mooke-01
  • Electro-acoustic violinist & composer Martha Mooke performs No Ordinary Window, a journey through the illuminating power of music. 2-4p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Stop by Nyack Business: Long Before the Malls at The Historical Society of the Nyacks Museum featuring photographs and memorabilia from local businesses in the Time Before The Malls. Open Sundays through May 29. 1p at Depew House, 50 Piermont Ave.
