A Growing Concern: Nyack’s Seed Exchange

by Jennifer Hausler
Nyack, March 5 — Rockland County’s first Seed Exchange takes root at the Nyack Library today.
seed_xchg_sunflowerA seed exchange (aka “seed library”) allows community members free access to seed that is grown or acquired by other community members for use in their home gardens. It allows gardeners to share seeds without having to purchase them from major seed companies.  A local seed exchange fosters the sharing of seeds that are “tried and true” – those most reliable and productive in our climate and conditions. Saving seed locally preserves varieties that are culturally significant, increases food security, and protects biodiversity.
Patrons will be able to check out seeds, get resources to learn about growing and saving seeds. If successful, participants can return harvested seeds once the growing season is over. A variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers will be available for spring and summer planting at the Nyack Seed Exchange.
seed_xchg_carrotsThe seed exchange has been seeded by several companies that have donate initial supplies including High Mowing Organic Seeds, Renee’s Garden, Seed Savers Exchange, Seeds of Change, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and Sow True Seeds.
There will be a “Seed Slam” event at the library on Sat March 12 with special guest Joan Gussow.  Participants will be able to check out seeds, talk to local gardeners about their favorite varieties and get sowing and growing tips.
The seed exchange is still looking for seed donations. If you would like to help kickstart this community effort, please place your seeds in an envelope labeled with contact information, as well as any notes about preferred growing conditions or history of the seeds. Open pollinated and/or heirloom flower and vegetable seeds are most appreciated but all seed donations are encouraged. Please note that hybrid seeds can only be used for growing, not saving, and should be carefully labelled.
