A leapling (or leaper) is someone who is born on leap day (February 29). Leap days are added to keep our calendar in alignment with the earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes the earth approximately 365.24 days or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds to revolve once around the sun. Without this adjustment nearly every four years, we would lose almost 6 hours every year. After 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days. According to the Gregorian calendar we currently follow, there’s a leap day added every year that is divisible by four except for years that are both divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400. This rule about centuries was added because and extra day every four years is too much of a correction.
The name “leap year” was coined because a fixed date in the calendar normally advances one day of the week from one year to the next. In a leap year, the date will advance two days from March onwards due to the extra day in February, i.e. leaping over one of the days of the week.

The Carnegie Concert Series will celebrate all things Irish with Nyack’s own Irish bandleader Sean Fleming and friends. Sean will be accompanied by fellow musicians Steve Holley on drums, Justin Jordan on guitar and Dave Reiss on bass. It’s sure to be a wonderful evening of music and Sean’s entertaining storytelling.
The Friends of the Nyack Library are asking that a $10 donation be made at the door to continue to bring excellent music programs to the library. Registration is required.
