The words pitchers and catchers report are music to baseball lovers ears.  As spring training gets underway, here are a few obscure rules that most people, even some players and managers may not know about.  Some of the rules are no longer relevant and aren’t even enforced.

  • MLB Rule 4.06 (2015 Edition) – Players of opposing teams shall not fraternize while in uniform.  This one is no longer enforced.
  • MLB Rule 5.06 (2015 Edition) – Each runner, including the batter, may advance three bases if a fielder deliberately touches a fair ball with his cap, mask or any part of his uniform detached from its proper place on his person.
  • MLB Rule 5.07 (2015 Edition) – When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter 12 seconds after he receives the ball.  Each time the pitcher shall delay the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.”  The intent of this rule is to avoid unnecessary delays, but it generally doesn’t get enforced.
