It’s not exactly what William had intended, but it still works. The Sonnet Man will give a special performance, rapping Shakespeare-themed songs, as part of The Children’s Shakespeare Theatre (CST) Winter Festival of One-Act Plays on Sat Jan 9 from 11a- 8p at The Nyack Center.
It’s part of an all-day celebration featuring works by Moliere, Shakespeare, and Thomas Middleton. Four directors and 38 young actors will tell stories of love, disguise, trickery, and great fun in a performance of four plays, along with other concurrent events and vendors throughout the day.
The Sonnet Man, aka Devon Glover, is a Brooklyn rapper, artist, writer, and teacher. He sets Shakespeare’s sonnets to Hip Hop as a modern day Sonnet Man, singing sonnets as originally written and then again with his own unique interpretation on The Bard’s language in today’s spoken word. Glover has perfomed all over the world and network TV including appearances in Prague, Netherlands, Bermuda, Canada, Jamaica and Stratford-Upon-Avon. He’s also been seen on The Today Show, MSNBC and MTV.
The one-day, one-act festival includes The Forced Marriage and The Learned Ladies (by Moliere), The Roaring Girl (Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker) and As You Like It (Shakespeare) which will be touring to Stratford, Ontario when CST represents the USA at the 14th Annual World Festival of Children’s Theater in June of 2016.
The Nyack Center is located at S. Broadway and Depew Ave in Nyack, NY. For more information about CST’s Winter Festival, visit BrownPaperTickets.
