How Did You Become an Artist?

I have always been surrounded by art, from my father who is a photographer and my mother who loved taking me to the Museum of Modern Art. It was just part of life; I drew, painted and took pictures but when I went to college it was as a psychology major, knowing I wanted to work with children.

LAI-Klass_brideIn my junior year, I switched my major to Art and went on to get a degree in Art Education. As an art teacher in Pearl River, I explored many art mediums along with my students and I have always been a practicing artist also.

What Kind of Art do you Make?

I was inspired to focus on watercolor painting by Carolyn Pedersen and spent many years exploring that medium. In the 90’s, my son became interested in photography and I spent much free time driving him to workshops and photo shoots taking in all the information and painting while other’s photographed.

Inspired by photographer Nancy Rotenberg, I began to explore photography as an art in itself and have fallen in love with it. At this point I am still painting, photographing and at times working on creative combinations of the two.

LAI_Klass_rockfellWhat’s Your Muse?

I am inspired by nature and life all around me. I tend to be captivated by lines and shapes in nature, rock formation, plants, flowers and water. Reflections and the patterns they make excite me and I love trying to capture them.

An artist is first and foremost a communicator and I am always trying to communicate my experience, my feelings and my sense of place to others.

LAI_Klass_reedsWhat’s Next?

I am having a solo show at the Piermont Fine Arts Gallery from November 19 – December 6th This show will be photographs, and some creative combinations of painting and photography and colored pencil drawing. We are open Thursdays and Sundays from 1-6 and Fridays and Saturdays from 1-9 pm. We will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, so on Black Friday, I will be offering some discounts in the hope that people who love art will be coming down to Piermont.
